HONOLULU — The Navy said it relieved the commander of a Pearl Harbor-based destroyer after losing confidence in her leadership. The Navy said in a brief news release that Cmdr. Kathryn J. Dawley was removed as the USS Hopper’s leader on Tuesday. It did not elaborate on the reason for her dismissal.
Capt. Don Rauch, deputy commander of Destroyer Squadron Three One, has temporarily assumed command of the Hopper until the Navy identifies a permanent replacement. Dawley took over as the ship’s commander a year ago.
A Navy news story from that time said Dawley was the first female commanding officer of the Hopper. She was also the first woman to command a warship named after a woman. The guided-missile destroyer is named after the late Rear Adm. Grace Murray Hopper, who was a pioneer in the field of computer science...

Grace is one of my heroes.
In general, I'd rather follow a female who is competent than a male who isn't.
“Brigade commander was sacked when his adjutant sodomized a prostitute at the officers club.”
There’s a Hallmark Channel movie in *that* story for sure.
Why do people presume women are bad in leadership positions and got ahead by gender?

I’m one of those people your referring to because I don’t believe women in Command of a warship during combat is a good idea. Just 2 quick reasons: WWII taught us that the Navy lost more sailors in combat than the Marines (34,607 Navy vs 17,376 Marines (see link below). This Naval combat was brutal with young men and officers frequently being blown into thousands of pieces from the big guns. In my opinion, crews seeing a woman explode in front of them would be very demoralized reducing combat effectiveness. I know I would. A Captain steering a warship into harms way also took great personal courage because of the virtual certainty of immediate death.
My second reason is that I believe ONLY the very best of officers should be in command of a warship with absolutely no exception. Women in command of a warship is a politically correct appointment and down deep both sides know it.
Of 332,000 active duty sailors today, my guess is that on any given day there are only maybe one hundred odd officers that are qualified based on merit and resume to command a Warship, if that.
We did at Dam Neck! Every week! Nacho bar night was the same night. Good times!
Grace Hopper was a brilliant computer scientist, and helped to develop the COBOL language. She actually discovered a literal "bug" in a computer--a wayward moth that had somehow found itself lodged in a relay of some sort, if my memory is correct.
Mirrors my experience during 22 years in the AF. Worst officer I worked for was a woman. Best officer I worked for was a woman. The men were a mixed bag, most pretty good, a few really bad.
She created Flow-Matic, and then COBOL.
One of the first three actual computer programmers on Earth.
One of the actual real pioneers of the modern age. They’d make movies about her too . . . if she was black.
I tried not to reply to this but this is so egregious. First, you mean sex, like male and female, not gender. Then you said you would wait for the facts, then spewed forth a bunch of opinions. What is it, what do you mean?
Let me help you out with the only fact you need to know; A woman was the Commanding Officer of a destroyer, and now she isn't. And that is a good thing.
That's what having quotas does, it makes people question qualifications, even when they are qualified.
Boy, no kidding!
I witnessed an outstanding Company Commander, with awards for valor, invited to resign his commission because his Birthday party had a dancer that wore pasties. The Post Commander’s wife passed by as the door to the private party opened. You just have to shake your head and drive on.
During the many years of my military and government career, I had three different female supervisors- one of them black. Fortunately, they were my age or older and thus “old school” so to speak. They weren’t out to prove anything, had none of the anti-male “feminist” chips on their shoulders and were just downright nice! Today’s “modern woman” not so much anymore and I suspect therein lies the problem.
“Any man that won’t follow a woman simply because they are a woman deserves scorn and sanction. In the military courts martial and dishonorable discharge.”
I think women are amazing. I see them everyday operating their motor vehicles by punching keys on their cell phones. I couldn’t do that.
“I tell people we used to have happy hour strippers in the back bar at the O’Club, and they look at me like my hat is on sideways. Chiefs Club across the street did, too.”
At the EM Club in Subic in the 70s they had “hostesses” who would come and sit at your table. They would kind of be your girlfriend for the evening, but there was no physical contact and they dressed fairly conservatively. Looking back it was kind of weird. Can you imagine that today?
Actually in nature a group of hyenas is always led by a female, but that is an anomaly for sure.
My guess is that she felt she had to drive her people real hard, just to prove she was deservedly in charge.
She is an 0-5, and that’s not easy to begin with. Especially after spending some service time as prior enlisted.
I just have to wonder if she enjoyed the power of being in charge more than the actual honor of it.
Anyone with a brain knows that high morale is really important wen it comes to teamwork. It’s extremely important in the military.
In the Air Force, we had a department all bases called MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation). Among other things, they were a place to go and rent a boat or other types of equipment for a fun day out.
I hope those kinds of things are still going strong. There has to be limited things available on a boat, but at least treat people with mutual respect and the honor due to them.
And penguins are sometimes gay. That doesnt make it right for humans.
Many visits to Subic and Cubi Pt. in the 70s & 80s. The Navy in Olongapo and the Air Force in Angeles City ran VD clinics in town to regularly check the bar girls. I remember some girls would try to get a legal hold on their honeyco’s just before leaving port. A few hundred pesos usually resolved the “misunderstanding.”
They’ll just go ahead and make that movie...she being played by a black woman. That’s the way it’s done today.
