Any military that puts anyone ahead by softening the rules to favor them is putting others in harms way.

Those rules were written in blood and exist for a reason.
In my long career in high tech I’ve had many managers, four women and the rest males. The worst manger(s) I ever had were male. The most disruptive, bad for moral and ineffective were three of the females. The fourth female was the best manager I ever had hands down. YMMV
Just love the woke inequality without the quality
ask any movie goer if they would pay to see it again... i’m sure the results would change things.
She gave a very nice speech, filled with humor...:)
She was apparently known for her "Nanowires::
A length of wire to visually demonstrate how far electricity travels in one nanosecond!
To this day, I feel lucky to have gotten someone like her at my graduation. Some people get Michael Moore or Hillary Clinton.
Yep
1st woman in command of a Destroyer to be relieved of command.
So true.
She spoke to the USCGA in 1986. We were very lucky. She was the one who coined, “Better to ask forgiveness than for permission.”
Interesting that nobody writes or talks about Hopper. She’s got to be close to the first USN flag officer. Invented a computer programming language.
And females are usually not good leaders.
Some occupations are not suited to women. Military should be all male.
Different times, different times for sure.
I hear that you can’t go on liberty in a foreign country anymore by going ashore in a Liberty launch and sauntering up the street.
Apparently, everything is arranged and you go in sanctioned groups.
I am glad I served in a different time.
Yes she was! She spoke at my high school a few *cough*thirtyfive*cough* years ago. I went in wondering why we had a female admiral speaking to us (I was/am a math+CS dork), but she was quite funny and not at all what I expected.
Agree. I’ve had some very good female managers.
it relieved the commander of a Pearl Harbor-based destroyer after losing confidence in her leadership. ... A Navy news story from that time said Dawley was the first female commanding officer of the Hopper. She was also the first woman to command a warship named after a woman. The guided-missile destroyer is named after the late Rear Adm. Grace Murray Hopper

Female conflict of interests or social experiment that did not work out?
She also allegedly made famous the use of the term "bug" for a problem in software...they had something that didn't work, and on inspection, they found a moth stuck in a relay switch and pasted it into their log book! (This is the actual logbook!)
Mariner is partially right, IMO. But it isn't that men won't follow women, although that is indeed sometimes the case with some men. In my career, I have worked directly for women, and there were a few I so respected and admired I would work my ass off for, and would willingly follow anywhere...except into battle.
The military is a different context completely, and that context is important for valid reasons.
That was exactly what I remember decades later...she had wonderful, down to earth humor that seemed to fit her like a glove!
If that were true, she would have originated two cultural reference points (in addition to "bug") that are used by millions of people every day. Pretty impressive.
looks like a case of lazy eye
I sometimes get a gut impression when I first visualize someone, and I got one when I saw hers. It wasn’t a wholly positive one. Not a strong one, just a short stab, but it was there.
That gut feeling isn’t always right, but oddly, it is sometimes stronger at times for various people. I wonder if I would have felt the same if I didn’t know she had been relieved of command before I saw the image.
Not hardly.
She came to speak at the Naval Academy in the early 80’s - can’t remember the exact year. I do remember that we all had kind of this eye-rolling anticipation of “who is this old lady and why should we care.” Then she spoke, and we all became fans very quickly. She had an incredibly nimble mind, and frankly was just cool as hell.
