A new variant of the coronavirus has developed in India, one that is making public health officials worried because it may be causing the country's terrible outbreak and could reduce the efficacy of available vaccines.
The India variant, known as B.1.617 and first identified in October, has been dubbed the “double mutant” variant because it contains two mutations of interest, E484Q and L452R. These are mutations on the spike protein, the part of the virus that attaches to a cell.
"Having two of these mutations which have been seen in other variants around the world are concerning, because there's a similarity in these mutations that confer increased transmissibility, and some of these mutations also result in reduced neutralization, which may have an impact on our countermeasures, including the vaccines," said Maria Van Kerkhove.
E484Q and L452R are known as escape mutations. These types of mutations make it easier for the spike proteins on the virus to evade the antibodies elicited by vaccines and invade cells in the body. Recent research in the journal Cell Host & Microbe found that E484Q was able to evade antibodies in convalescent plasma. An article in Cell recently found that variants containing L452R became more resistant to neutralizing antibodies.
Those attributes raise the fear that a person who's been vaccinated might still be able to carry enough of the mutated virus to infect others, including people who have not been inoculated or have been but have weakened immune systems...
Still, people who have been vaccinated and are infected by a coronavirus mutation are not likely to develop severe COVID-19 or die. Vaccines also elicit a response from another part of the immune system known as T-cells that attack cells infected with a virus... T-cells are able to recognize mutated forms of the coronavirus.

With less than 1% of India’s population vaccinated how can thr possibly conclude anything about the effectiveness of vaccines against it?!?
Seriously folks... India got lucky and never saw the cases per
Million other places did.. now that the ya are, the utter ineffectiveness of their health care system is coming to light.
India has something like 1 hospital bed per every 2000 people.. and honestly I think that’s rare is exaggerated.
US for example has 2.5 per 1000 people.
Meaning it would take 5 times the cases per 1000 people to overwhelm the US as it does India... and that assumes everything else being equal, which it most certainly is not.
It’s strange how I’ve always read (and been told by a bio-scientist relative) that a virus mutates in order to not die out. In order to accomplish this it gets less lethal and more contagious. My relative, who works in the vaccine/new drug research field said, “Four waves and it will disappear.”
Now we have a virus that mutates and gets more deadly?
If true, is that evidence it was designed by humans? Or is it evidence that it will die out soon?
I wish we had an actual investigative, honest media.

BREAKING: U.S. announces it is urgently sending specific raw materials required for India’s vaccine production
China is certainly behind this. India is China’s only competent adversary in east Asia.
China wants to plant their heels in the mid-east because that is where the king of energy is—OIL
the chinks push the green energy here in the US to weaken us, knowing damn well that windmills and solar panels cant support a country of 300 million people. China needs energy and the mid-east has it.
they would love nothing more then for India to be weakened.
we import a lot of goods from India. several of our manufacturers are having issues getting material out
“People who get it start to get sick and 5-8 hours later are dead.”
If that was true India wouldn’t be complaining about crowded hospitals, just crowded crematoriums.
Smells like BS.
chink chink
I mean ching ching
Most people are dying at home. The govt is now allowing people to bury or cremate family members in their own backyard.
Please understand, I abhor fear mongering. I really do. I think we're in much better shape here in the U.S. than the rest of the world is because we have the #1 best medical services here. India though, doesn't have anything near the US' capabilities and so here they are, dealing with a horrible third-wave.
It’s all BS.. The next crisis needs a new scare tactic variant.. How convenient.
India was so sure they were 'out of the woods' they were selling excess vaccine to other countries. Very few Indians are vaccinated as a percent of population which adds to this problem...
I am sure you know the difference between influenza & covid-19. Because you are not an ignorant poster. Just in case you may have forgotten, covid-19 is 25 times more contagious than Flu. A flu patient in hospital is not isolated inside a plastic tent. Covid-19 patients are. Now your memory has been refreshed about why covid-19 is a pandemic and annual influenza is not.
This is a man made virus from Wuhan China that will eventually kill all of us. Why use a bomb when you can do this?
You lying troll.
People aged 26-44 are 44% of the cases and 10% of the deaths.

I am starting to believe it. It was done by China to help defeat Trump in 2020 because without the pandemic, there was no way to defeat him.
Are you sure senility has not set in along with grey whiskers?
It’s doing what viruses do.
