Gina McCarthy: Electric Vehicles Will Be Cheaper ‘When More Are Sold’ – We Have to Help with Rebates or Tax Incentives

During a town hall on CNN on Friday, White House National Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy said that electric vehicles will become cheaper “when more are sold” and that we have to help consumers with either direct rebates or tax incentives.

McCarthy said, “The American Jobs Plan and the work that we’re doing to address our greenhouse gas emissions are really going to speak to this very issue. Because it’s not about sacrifice. It is about working with our manufacturing sector to revise it — to revive it. It’s about actually building batteries in the U.S. so the cost goes down. It’s us taking back the supply chains that we’ve lost to other countries. And it is about putting people back to work in good union jobs. There is a legitimate issue of electric vehicles that they’re not accessible to everybody. That will change over time.”

Moderator Dana Bash then cut in to ask, “When will that happen?”

McCarthy responded, “One of the ways in which we’re looking at this is to work with the car manufacturers. We didn’t choose electric vehicles. They came to us, and said, you know what, electric vehicles are the future. But they’re producing them in China, not here. And so, we need to reinvigorate our manufacturing sector. We have two battery manufacturing companies that are starting up, one to serve GM and one to serve Ford, right in the United States. We’re actually proposing to do a lot of consumer rebates, we’re proposing to look at tax rebates, things to lower the cost.”

Bash then cut in to ask, “When are they going to be cheaper?”

“the electricity will get more expensive to produce”

Hourly Electric Grid Monitor

https://www.eia.gov/beta/electricity/gridmonitor/dashboard/electric_overview/US48/US48

It was showing 420 million kwh last time I checked last night.

I think that implies a spare capacity of around 3 kwh per possible electric car from about midnight to 4am, or about 12 kwh per day per possible electric car in the US, or about 48 miles per day.

We have the existing capacity to produce the electricity for natural gas power plants.

All it takes is to remember plugging in your car after parking it in the garage.

Your cellphone is singing.

Hello, this is Caarrllaa speaking. You forgot to plug me in.

To lower the price substantially will take new technology (and time).

Tesla can do that right now. Reduce the size, power, range, comfort, and eliminate dangerous self-driving features, and then you can have a more affordable Tesla.

“Twenty-eight states have laws requiring a special registration fee for plug-in electric vehicles. Of those, 14 states also assess a fee on plug-in hybrid vehicles. These fees are typically in addition to traditional motor vehicle registration fees.”

https://www.ncsl.org/research/energy/new-fees-on-hybrid-and-electric-vehicles.aspx

“The fees range from $50 per year in Colorado and Hawaii to $225 for a plug-in electric vehicle in Washington.”

Why not just give all Americans free electric cars? Then all those enjoying bernie’s free college will at least be able to get to their colleges. Problem fixed.

The Kodak solution. Give them free cars, but make the money back on electricity.

“give everyone a new electric car”

Some voters are “more equal than others”, especially at government welfare benefit payout times.

Yeah, you don’t buy the printer, you buy the ink or toner.

Same thing.

“Reduce the size, power, range, comfort...”

I believe I still have one of those Strombecker electric cars from about 55 years ago.

“It’s about actually building batteries in the U.S. so the cost goes down.”

Of course the lithium and many other materials can never come from the US. And we will always be dependent on where it does come from for as long as it lasts. There are many ways that supply can end. And mining it and transporting it uses a ton of energy and then transporting it.

Then there is the environmental disaster from spent batteries.

Electric cars are toxic chemical polluters.

The real purpose is that in the end electric cars will enslave the people of America in more ways than one. Control the electricity. Control peoples movements. And long trips will no longer be practical.

“rebates and credits incentivize manufacturers to charge more”

Elon Musk will be able to finance an expedition to Alpha Centauri, so at least some good will come of it.

What fuel will generate the electricity for electric cars, and has anybody calculated transmission losses to electricity meant for electric cars?
