The curriculum has always been intended to prepare students for higher level math and to weed out those who do not have mathematical aptitude.

If we're all forced to fund public school, then the curriculum should aim for all kids to learn.

Many still won't take Calculus, for example, but others will in 11th or 12th grade.

I don’t see anything foolish in the curriculum, at least as it’s described in the infographic.

I can’t understand all the outrage about this.

I understand.

However, it is my view that If they hadn’t introduced race into it, this would not be an issue. You wouldn’t have even posted it here. It would likely never be known about outside a small circle of legislators, educators and concerned parents.

On its own merits, it might have been quite valid.

If that text of their remarks is valid (and I have no reason to think it isn’t) I reject the entire endeavor lock, stock, and barrel based on that alone.

You and I will differ on this, because I understand you pooh-pooh the linkage to some kind of racial element, and likely think it is window dressing.

I feel very differently on this, and I don’t care how worthwhile it is.

IMO, we need to burn this racial and social justice pandering down to the ground, scorch and salt the earth it comes from so it can spring forth no more. It is a toxic poison, and simply letting it go legitimizes it.

We can disagree on this.

The destruction of our public education system is already being used as justification for importing a foreign middle class; eventually there really will be too few qualified Americans for the jobs here.

So learning advanced math before HS is wrong?

If I were the parent of an AP student, I would be really, really p**sed off.

Don’t they realize that they are putting their students at a disadvantage when it comes time to apply for college?

Learning advanced math before HS is great, but not absolutely necessary. If parents want their kids to take calculus, for example, before grade 11, they can do what many other parents do: put their kids into private schools or dual-credit college courses on their own dime. Instead, they’re here complaining that the FREE education might make their kids wait for high school.

Heck if you’re really motivated, plenty of relatively cheap calculus courses on udemy.com.

Exactly. Or they can do what some bright, studious kids do - they can learn on their own and take AP exams for credit.

Okay. No kids here so no dog in this particular hunt.

Still, given the track record of “education” in this country...... it seems we went from a “can do” people to a “can’t do” people. And yes, I realize that’s a broad blanket statement that isn’t fair to everyone but it seems the way we’re headed sometimes.

You do have a dog in this hunt...

Do you want an uneducated populace surrounding you?

Stupid people are the single biggest problem on the planet.

Yore right in the macro sense. I just don’t have the interest that a parent of a child would have. Which would be the micro side of the equation.

You do have a dog in the hunt. You're a taxpayer. Your money is taken to pay into the system, whether you have kids or not.

we went from a “can do” people to a “can’t do” people.

I agree, but I see the parents complaining about this new math curriculum as the "can't do" ones and the new math curriculum as "can do," if it's supposed to better prepare students for higher level math. Students aren't being held back if they have calculus (for example) in junior or senior year. Then they enter college with it fresh in their minds.

Glad you posted this.

People here love to bash teachers. And they absolutely should bash the dumb leftists.

But there are good teachers out there. (Fewer now than there used to be, but still…) As you said, the problem is that they don’t last. They CAN’T. They are driven out by insane administrators, woke colleagues, crazy policies that do everything but let them teach, and parents that think their failing children should be treated like Einstein.

So if you build a bridge, make sure there isn’t any Oregon and Virginia math graduates in the engineer department... They might think a 2 miles bridge can carry 3 tons, but they built it only for 5 pounds...
