Virginia moving to eliminate all accelerated math courses before 11th grade as part of equity-focused plan

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is moving to eliminate all accelerated math options prior to 11th grade, effectively keeping higher-achieving students from advancing as they usually would in the school system.

Loudoun County school board member Ian Serotkin posted about the change via Facebook on Tuesday. According to Serotkin, he learned of the change the night prior during a briefing from staff on the Virginia Mathematics Pathway Initiative (VMPI).

"[A]s currently planned, this initiative will eliminate ALL math acceleration prior to 11th grade," he said. "That is not an exaggeration, nor does there appear to be any discretion in how local districts implement this. All 6th graders will take Foundational Concepts 6. All 7th graders will take Foundational Concepts 7. All 10th graders will take Essential Concepts 10. Only in 11th and 12th grade is there any opportunity for choice in higher math courses."

His post included a chart with what appeared to be set math courses for 2022-2030.

VDOE spokesperson Charles Pyle indicated to Fox News that the courses would allow for at least some variation depending on students' skill level. "Differentiated instruction means providing instruction that is catered to the learning needs of each child (appropriate levels of challenge and academic rigor)," Pyle said.

On VDOE's website, the state features an infographic that indicates VMPI would require "concepts" courses for each grade level. It states various goals like "[i]mprove equity in mathematics learning opportunities," "[e]mpower students to be active participants in a quantitative world," and "[i]dentify K-12 mathematics pathways that support future success."

During a webinar posted on YouTube in December, a member of the "essential concepts" committee claimed that the new framework would exclude traditional classes like Algebra 1 and Geometry.

The silver lining of all these cynical dumbing-down policies could be a nose-dive in public school enrollment and an equal decline in teachers’ union membership and political clout.

Hopefully parents will opt for home-schooling or parochial schools.

The US will become like any other third word country where only the poor use the public schools.

No, you’ll homeschool. Doing so means your child won’t have to declare his or her gender in 5th grade, nor apologize for the skin color they were born with.

Not a bad thing. One more step in the conservatives’ self secession. They’ll leave these states and migrate to decent states. Smart states vs stupid states.

Will there be a class on how to get a Voter ID? That would be a useful life skill.

We know that 1 + 1 = 2 is racist, so change it to 1 + 1 be whatever you wants it to be.

Private schools are viewed as racist in many areas.

And most school districts work very hard to bully parents into avoiding private schools

I am going to miss indoor plumbing.

That will be the first major thing to collapse

They should also make the tall athletes wear 30# ankle weights when playing basketball, to equalize the unfair height advantage. The better shooters should only be able to take shots that count with their “off” hand.

VDOE's "equity" experiment has a predictable outcome, families will move to private school, home schooling, or leave the state.

There is, however, a useful math expression imbedded within the equity-focused plan...Lowest Common Denominator.

And I’m sure China will do the same thing with their students.

God, this Country is too stupid to live anymore. Might as well get it over with now.

‘intentionally restricting gifted or motivated students is not only abuse, it is madness.’

problem is the entire concept of public schools is abuse from the word go; there are children and young adults who wish to learn, and use education as a way to advance to their future well being, and there are those children and young adults who clearly do not want to learn, and who wish to fart around until they get old enough to realize that they screwed up and have to seek education at a late date in their lives...these two groups should never have been mixed together, they should have been identified and placed in privately run systems designed to accomodate their life visions...yes, this may seem exclusionary, but it would have been totally necessary to make education something worth more than just daycare and great perks for teachers and, even more so, administrators...

too late now, though...public education is a classic example of dreams gone wrong, of transcendentalism run aground on the shoals of reality...

Leftists continue to drive the knowledge of this country down. They won’t be happy until the country falls to last in the world.

Besides it is the most racists’ move they have made yet. Apparently they think that because a person has black skin tones he/she is too stupid to learn.

‘...anti-God (of course)...’

is anyone preventing people from placing their children in a church centered class for religious instruction, which is where it clearly belongs...?

The 3-legged stool of understanding is held up by history, languages, and mathematics. Equipped with those three you can learn anything you want to learn. But if you lack any one of them you are just another ignorant peasant with dung on your boots.”

‘If I had to send my kids to school now.... we’d be looking into private school...’

yes, of course, that’s all well and good; but, it’s too late...your onerous obligation of financing the flunking public school system will never go away...

the country ran amok on a perverted dream of ‘equality’ in the 1850’s, and have been slowly paying for it until it has reached the critical mass of today...

Some call it equity focused, I call it ‘dumbing’ down students. The high school I went to back in the day was fairly average. It offered Algebra in freshman year, Geometry in sophomore, Trig in junior and Calc in senior. No Einstein’s taking the courses just regular kids. Other kids took the vocational route. Really doing a dis-service to the students.
