The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is moving to eliminate all accelerated math options prior to 11th grade, effectively keeping higher-achieving students from advancing as they usually would in the school system.
Loudoun County school board member Ian Serotkin posted about the change via Facebook on Tuesday. According to Serotkin, he learned of the change the night prior during a briefing from staff on the Virginia Mathematics Pathway Initiative (VMPI).
"[A]s currently planned, this initiative will eliminate ALL math acceleration prior to 11th grade," he said. "That is not an exaggeration, nor does there appear to be any discretion in how local districts implement this. All 6th graders will take Foundational Concepts 6. All 7th graders will take Foundational Concepts 7. All 10th graders will take Essential Concepts 10. Only in 11th and 12th grade is there any opportunity for choice in higher math courses."
His post included a chart with what appeared to be set math courses for 2022-2030.
VDOE spokesperson Charles Pyle indicated to Fox News that the courses would allow for at least some variation depending on students' skill level. "Differentiated instruction means providing instruction that is catered to the learning needs of each child (appropriate levels of challenge and academic rigor)," Pyle said.
On VDOE's website, the state features an infographic that indicates VMPI would require "concepts" courses for each grade level. It states various goals like "[i]mprove equity in mathematics learning opportunities," "[e]mpower students to be active participants in a quantitative world," and "[i]dentify K-12 mathematics pathways that support future success."
During a webinar posted on YouTube in December, a member of the "essential concepts" committee claimed that the new framework would exclude traditional classes like Algebra 1 and Geometry.

CRT is spreading all over the USA.
Calculus in high school kept me from being bored outta my gourd.
Parents, just get your kids the heck out of publik skrewls.
Firm your own informal unions.
Band together to teach your kids.
Your anecdotal post is irrelevant.
Your crude attempt to cover up or slide reality under the rug is precisely what is wrong with America.
We are both thinking the same thing.
The dumbing down of the curriculum is going to create opportunity elsewhere. And for those that can afford it and care about their kids.
The return of the ‘private instructor.’
I can clearly remember when I was stuck in the normal slow paced English class for dummies, sitting there rolling my eyes and shaking my head at people’s stupidity.
Then my teacher called me up and said she was sending me to the accelerated class. I was so much happier there.
You don’t need money.
Bet plenty of parents, grandparents, retirees with know-how could get together to teach pods of kids.
On a volunteer basis if need be.
It’s not about money. It’s about will.
they’ll be a shoo-in for a job at ihop...
More intentional destruction designed to bring down the US. Yes, there are lots of useful idiots on the Left, but some are very aware where this all leads.
If you care about your kid, one will find a way.
Private tutor
Neighborhood group funding classes for one tutor
Supplying books to your child above his school grade
Online classes
There’s a huge opportunity here and as conservatives imagine ...us...supplementing the curriculums.
Guess Iām not moving to Virginia.
It’s coming to a state (and school) near you.
Yes, it’s spreading like wildfire. No state, heck, no small community should ever think itself immune.
Instead of taking courses from the good students, the children without that type of aptitude would be better served to go to work or apprenticeship.
I agree.
Even to create pods for classes something as simple as Mighty Networks would work.
Those children motivated to succeed would do well. Keeping it as a supplement to regular education should keep the government out of private program.
Dumbing down is an essential component to “equity”. The fact that there exists gifted people with clearly superior intellectual abilities demonstrates that the concept of “equity” is a fraud. Not all are intellectually equal. Not all are capable of the same achievments.
Well the āEducatorsā (aka, Indoctinarians) are going to do their best to make sure that Virginia never produces another Thomas Jefferson, Booker T Washington, or Richard Byrd.
I was raised to believe that Virginians could do anything and do it well. I took pride in the fact that so many scholars, educators, explorers and scientists came from my home state.
Now it looks like under Govār Rat Bastard, the state is moving as far back in the line as possible.
What will become of thee Oh Virginia?
Go to the moon.?? They won't be able to go to the grocery store.!!
It really is shaping up to be like that movie, "Idiocracy".
Microcosm of one world ideology. Everybody at the same level means middle class has to lose, middle learners have to be stifled so as to not excel.
Excellence is anathema to equity.
The silver lining of all these cynical dumbing-down policies could be a nose-dive in public school enrollment and an equal decline in teachers’ union membership and political clout.
Hopefully parents will opt for home-schooling or parochial schools.
The US will become like any other third word country where only the poor use the public schools.
