South China Sea: Vietnam warship hits back at Beijing aggression with ‘combat drills'

China had sent a fleet of fishing vessels with militia aboard to the Spratly Islands earlier this month, despite the Philippines and Vietnam claiming they have control over the territory. In response, Hanoi sent a warship near the disputed island, while the Philippines sent reconnaissance aircraft to observe China's fishing fleet.

Vietnam deployed the Quang Trung, an anti-submarine frigate, as well as its on-board helicopter to carry out military drills in view of China's fishing vessels.

A spokesperson from Hanoi's Ministry of Foreign Affairs blasted the incursion, and stated the "activities of Chinese ships ... seriously violate Vietnam's sovereignty".

The spokesperson also claimed China's actions violated the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea.

One of Vietnam's coast guard ships is moored at Whitsun Reef, and is observing the near 220 Chinese "militia" boats active in the region.

To China 50,000 deaths has the same impact as swatting one fly in an open dairy barn.

It lasted ten years?

Dsng, I thought it was less than a year.

Regardless, the chicoms got their asses whooped.

you beat me to the punchline. the vietcong gave the chicoms a bloody nose the last time they sparred, no doubt they were more battle hardened after combat with the yankees.

however it would be great theatre now to see if the modernized red army can do better against the vietnamese. i wouldn’t bet against the gooks.

RE: It lasted ten years? Dsng, I thought it was less than a year.

It was a border war fought between the People’s Republic of China and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in early 1979. China launched an offensive in response to Vietnam’s actions against the Khmer Rouge in 1978, which ended the rule of the Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge. Both China and Vietnam claimed victory in the last of the Indochina Wars.

OK, here’s the story.... Chinese forces entered northern Vietnam and captured several cities near the border. On March 1979, China declared that the gate to Hanoi was open and that their punitive mission had been achieved.

Chinese troops then withdrew from Vietnam. As Vietnamese troops remained in Cambodia until 1989, China was unsuccessful in its goal of dissuading Vietnam from involvement in Cambodia. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Sino-Vietnamese border was finalized.

I was told the Chinese got their butts kicked in that skirmish. There’s more. We never gave V. Nam the $4 billion Kissinger promised. Viets were not forthcoming on the POW issue. We could give it to them now. What would they do with the money? Buy arms.

I collect animated gifs...I must have thousands of them. I see them as a form of pop art, something that appeals to my sometimes twisted sense of humor.

Those losses were suffered in a much shorter time frame than that. The bad blood between China and Vietnam goes back loooooooong time.

They are already buying arms, so they would increase the pace. Vietnam has been working to update key parts of their defense capabilities.

The Sino-Vietnamese War was fought from 17 February to 16 March 1979.
