Minutes after State Police officer Darian Jarrott pulled over Omar Cueva along Interstate 10 east of Deming, he noticed a firearm in the truck.
“Do you mind if I take it off you, for my safety?” Jarrott asks through the passenger side window.
The officer never got the chance.
As the two men walk to the back of the truck, Cueva raises the rifle and shoots an unsuspecting Jarrott. The officer falls to the ground, reaching for his gun, and Cueva moves around the truck, shooting him several more times.
Cueva puts the rifle to the back of Jarrott’s head and fires once more before he jumps into the truck and speeds off down the highway.
On Friday State Police released lapel and dash cam footage and details of the Feb. 4 fatal shooting of the 28-year-old Lordsburg native, a father of three who had a fourth child on the way.
The man who shot him, 39-year-old Cueva, was killed in a gunfight with authorities in Las Cruces soon after. Jarrott was the first New Mexico State Police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in more than 30 years.
The dash camera footage shows the two men walk to the back of the truck, Cueva holding an AR-15 style rifle in one hand and what looks like a walkie-talkie or police scanner in the other.
Without warning Cueva raises the rifle and opens fire, shooting Jarrot multiple times as vehicles drive by on the highway.
State Police spokesman Ray Wilson said State Police officers Lionel Palomares and Sonny Montes caught up to Cueva headed east on I-10 and Cueva pulled over and fired at the officers. Both officers fired back at Cueva who got back into the truck and continued east.

I can’t from my desktop.
Really?
archive.vn/ is your friend.
Down here in the oil patch, the only “law” outside the city is the sheriff and state police. I imagine they must coordinate to provide some bit of protection. Down here the saying “when seconds count, help is minutes away” should be “an hour away” and be prepared to be on your own.
I broke down on a Saturday morning a couple of months ago on US-285 north of Roswell (radiator blew out) and called a tow truck. I waited close to an hour for one to get to me and in that time there was no state police or sheriff who passed in either direction.
Any dept worth a damn has 2 or 3 that keep it in business.
One is a lie detector - not the machine, but a guy who can ask you 100 questions and tell which 99 you answered truthfully. Regardless of rank this guy is the boss and be not the fool who pisses him off because he is the one who keeps the numbskulls alive.
The other is a boogerman so scary and smart and dirty that badboys piss ambergris when he arrives.
You better be as good as number 1 and as smart as 2 before putting your life in their hands - 95% of humanity isn’t that smart or good.
Give a fool a badge and a gun and he is still a fool, and no fool is as dangerous as a fool with a badge and a gun.

body cam video starts at 1.00 minute mark.
My prayers go out to the officers family. This is a pure case of poor training by the department.
“The other is a boogerman so scary”
Nope.... no way. Wouldn’t want that guy digging up my nose.
The booger? Sheesh he only goes after toughguy street morons who “ain’t afraid of no stinkin cops”.
The ones I knew could make Mike Tyson wet trouser.
The smiling friendly one is the reason I drive carefully and don’t even shoplift a paper clip.
They take turns
