An oversight board created to scrutinize research that would enhance highly dangerous pathogens did not review a (National Institutes of Health) grant that funded a lab in Wuhan, China, to genetically modify bat-based coronaviruses.
Experts say the NIH grant describes scientists conducting gain-of-function research, a risky area of study that, in this case, made SARS-like viruses even more contagious. Federal funding for gain-of-function research was temporarily suspended in 2014 due to widespread scientific concerns it risked leaking supercharged viruses into the human population.
[snip]But the NIH subagency that awarded the grant to the nonprofit group EcoHealth Alliance to study Chinese bat coronaviruses opted against forwarding it to the P3CO committee, an NIH spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation, meaning the research received federal funding without an independent review by the HHS board.
“This is a systemic problem,” Rutgers University professor of chemical biology Richard H. Ebright told the DCNF, referring to the loophole in the review framework.

No surprise at all. Government almost never pays attention after they allocate the money. They just move on to the next thing. Only when things blow up does it get their attention.
What is really sick is that we banned the practice here in the USA, and instead of sticking to our principles we just outsourced it to the communists. So damn stupid.

We have a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their entire mission in life is to prevent and control diseases. They have thousands of worker bees getting paid fairly large sums of money, and I don’t even know how many billions of dollars in their annual budget.
And yet, despite “controlling and preventing disease” being their name and their raison d’etre, they couldn’t be bothered to replenish stockpiles of PPE for our hospitals in the event of an entirely predictable outbreak of deadly pathogen.
I have no doubt that some conscientious clerk wrote up a report about it and sent it to his/her superiors, where they put it into a filing cabinet somewhere.
It is refreshing to see an expenditure of tax dollars actually accomplish its intended result.
When I read the headline, I thought maybe General Grant had risen to lead our response!
If US Grant can capture Vicksburg and Richmond he can certainly capture Wuhan.
If we had an unbiased law enforcement agency, he’d be in prison.
