In Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the president unveiled his new $2.5 trillion "infrastructure" plan which, as Katie explained, has little to do with physical infrastructure at all. Most of the money is reportedly saved to fight climate change and social justice projects.
And Amtrak wants in. Amtrak, President Biden's famously favorite mode of transportation, is now seeking to take advantage of the president's new infrastructure spending. They are asking for Congress to pave the way to help them carry 52 million passengers a year by 2035. They also released their proposed map, which includes new routes to their schedules. Some rather long routes.

Trains better than planes? Fewer stairs to board them perhaps?
If they would connect Louisville to Nashville (or Carbondale to Nashville), people could use Amtrak to get from Chicago and other places in the Midwest to Florida. Not only are too many people too far from the nearest Amtrak station, but often there is only one train a day, which comes through at 2 or 3 a.m.
Because, in 300 years, passenger rail service has never turned a profit? It has always been subsidized by public funds?
Or, is it coming out of your pocket?
Why, yes it is!
Democrats are not interested in facts. The government is there to provide all things for all people, with magic.
Well that doesn’t seem fair or equitable does it. SMDH! Simply put: Fookin’ idjits!
No, it was not always subsidized by public funds. In fact, for a long period, passenger rail was actually garnering more revenue than freight. It wasn’t until the regulations and taxation were piled on that losses started, which was aggravated by the government subsidizing roads (and later airports) and giving tax breaks to trucking companies (mostly introduced by Democrats of course).
BTW, railroads have been around for 196 years. If they were around for 300 years, Benjamin Franklin would have been riding them from Boston to Philadelphia.
Jacksonville FL to Mobile AL is getting suspended. WHY?
Make the Left live up to their fallacies; passenger trains need to be only wind and solar powered, including solar cells and sails on the train cars themselves, no diesels, and the train cars must be made out of recyclable organic compounds.
More high speed rail nonsense - where the trains are supposed to go 150-200mph, but because of all the stops, its faster to drive, than take the heavily subsidized and nearly empty trains
We is beein’ railroaded.
The only time I have ever considered taking the Acella train was to go to midtown Manhattan. However, by the time I drove to south station in Boston and parked, waited for the train, I could have driven to Hartford(half way) and then another 2 hrs to Manhattan.
The other consideration is what it costs to PARK your car in Manhattan. Last time it was around $50/day. Don’t even think about bringing a big vehicle like a Suburban because that will cost at least $100/day to park in Manhattan. Plus the valet will steal anything in your car like loose change.
Trains only work if you live in the city and your destination is another city.
I looked at that map, and all I can think is LOLOLOLOL. Good luck, you dolts!
By plane, or automobile.
I took Amtrak ONCE. From Los Angeles to Seattle. It was absolutely miserable. The train broke down several times. They had to sit in spur lines for hours at a time waiting for cargo trains to pass. They ran our of running water half way through. The AC broke in the observation ‘lounge.’ It was suppose to be a ‘fun family time’ on the train but was a miserable trek on a smelly uncomfortable DMV on rails.
BARF WARNING for that PDF link. What a bunch of garbage. Just more money for a federal jobs program for services no one likes.
I have never seen the border patrol the few times I have ridden on Amtrak, but once took a train from Budapest to Vienna. This was in 1980. Hungarian officials came through looking for any Hungarian who might be trying to hide in order to get out of the country. They left foreign tourists alone.
Amtrak needs:
1. Total makeover.
2. Ditching all routes that now cannot earn ticket revenue exceeding operations and maintenance costs. That will leave only the Northeast corridor of Amtrak in place and privatizing it totally out from under Congress or Presidential meddling.
3. Selling off all other Amtrak assets, and even where possible selling former route authority for some routes that Congress granted to Amtrak, wherever there is a viable commercial outfit, with viable capital investment support, that would make modern, profitable use of a route, as a private company with zero taxpayer support.
Ten years after that we’d start to see real, private high speed rail - WHERE IT WOULD ACTUALLY work and not just to satisfy some politicians.
So glad to know there will now be a train to Ronkonkoma.
Our Government overlords say you have no need to go there. Just shut up, do as they say, and live your life the way they tell you.
