In Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the president unveiled his new $2.5 trillion "infrastructure" plan which, as Katie explained, has little to do with physical infrastructure at all. Most of the money is reportedly saved to fight climate change and social justice projects.
And Amtrak wants in. Amtrak, President Biden's famously favorite mode of transportation, is now seeking to take advantage of the president's new infrastructure spending. They are asking for Congress to pave the way to help them carry 52 million passengers a year by 2035. They also released their proposed map, which includes new routes to their schedules. Some rather long routes.

Great gif. I’m on a tear of responding to my wife when she asks any questions “Don’t know. Might have something to do with Choo Choo.” She thinks it’s adorable of course.

I’m all for train travel between cities, particularly close-by ones.
Why can’t US rail companies provide such a service?

Go ahead and read a Department of Transportation Federal Register sometime—and you will find out why space travel is easier than rail travel.

After we are forced to pay for it, I wonder if we will be required to have a vaccine passport to ride on it.

Maybe what Amtrak needs to do is just run specials from the open border to all the red states that the Junta wants to infect and turn in Blue strongholds. That would save a lot of time and the packed cars could be used to make sure everyone is infected.

Is this on top of the $80 million subsidy they got in the “infrastructure” bill?

Yeah; the same left-wing movement that yanked passenger rail out of the hands of the private sector and made it all state-run says this nowadays. There are no passenger trains operated by the private sector in this country, and nowadays there are no domestic locomotive or railcar manufacturers either; Amtrak’s new electric and diesel locomotives are built by Siemens.

And I remember riding Amtrak in the late 1980s when it was boarded by the border patrol looking for illegals.

Because the federal government regulates them out of the potential markets.
Nixon made a big mistake (from the country’s perspective) when he created Amtrak instead of slashing regulation and taxation on the railroads.
