I wonder if there will be a call for immigration control.

Funny stuff. A big part of the leftist/Communist plan are to divide the united.

Flood the country with 3rd world types which they've been doing for decades, most of whom have few skills, can't speak the language and most have no intention whatsoever of assimilating to good citizens. Open borders and endless chain immigration has nearly destroyed the U.S. It creates significant chaos in every direction.

This is one of the big Communist strategies for the destruction of America. And it's working perfectly.

Divide the united. It's the plan.

Yes, “Issa” is Arabic for Jesus, many Muslims do have similar names, does not mean he is ethnically “Christian,”
Muslims consider Jesus to be a great prophet. Though if you ask them what did Jesus say to get that appellation, they rarely know anything at all, which is sad.

"They have the same civil liberties that you and I do.

Actually, they don't. For instance, if you're mentally incompetent, you cannot enter into a legally binding contract. You cannot serve on a jury, or as a witness in a trial, not even your own. So, they are already subject to some restrictions.

I agree this is a complicated subject. But, at the end of the day, I think there are some diagnosis and medications that should be disqualifying for buying or possessing firearms. Paranoid schizophrenia is just such a diagnosis. People who are hallucinating, even if they're plainly non-violent, probably shouldn't be handling weapons

I also agree that there are a lot of crazy people who have little or no support system and that's a huge problem. But, a surprising number of these spree-shooters do have families, middle-class and even upper-middle class families. Semi-automatic rifles aren't cheap. These aren't homeless nutters walking into 'gun free zones' shooting up the place. These are oftentimes people of some means. The Colorado movie theater shooter's mom was a psych nurse and his dad had a really good job, IIRC.

Ultimately, we either take some measured, circumspect steps to get a better handle on the mentally impaired's access to firearms, or we're all going to see restrictions on our own civil liberties.

In order to be prohibited from possessing firearms/ammo under Title 18, USC, Section 922g(4), you have to have been “adjudicated a mental defective”. It is a very high bar and my understanding is that either a court must declare this in an official proceeding or you need to be civilly committed (involuntary) for a rather long time (longer than most insurances will cover for certain).

Being evaluated multiple times at a hospital for mental issues is NOT enough to disqualify someone under federal law. Having everyone who knows you say you are crazy and unstable is not enough. Being kicked out of school or fired from a job for mental issues is insufficient.

It has to be a longer-term commitment for psychiatric care (generally where you are not free to leave) or an official finding by a judge in either a criminal or civil proceeding usually based on the professional opinion of a psychiatrist or psychologist.

We will have to wait and find out what the history of this man was, but absent what I wrote above he would be allowed to exercise his 2A rights and purchase a firearm.

It is always easy in hindsight to say would, shoulda, and coulda, but reality, as you stated, is a complicated subject! Some will blame the gun. Some will blame the lack of guns. Some will blame a lack of involuntary mental treatment. Some will blame immigration or religion. Some will blame pharmaceuticals. Some will even blame the police.

Sadly, these incidents always invoke strong opinions that usually are drawn from preexisting belief or even desires to promote a narrative, but it is almost always highly complex with multiple factors.

There are instances where one preexisting belief crashes into another and it is decided on a hierarchy. Take the Gulf War veteran who gets a disability from the VA for mental illness. He is a vet and a hero. He has filed for and is receiving a disability check from the government for mental illness attributed to his service. He is probably prohibited under federal law based on his “disability”. The VA cannot tell you what his diagnosis is or even his disability (patient privacy). It makes it easier for those with another agenda to label no further than “veteran”.

However, if the VA or government acts to remove firearms or ammunition from his possession in accordance with the law there is a lot of anger among some who view it as a violation of their 2A rights or use it to further their own agenda that has little to do with the well-being of the veteran or those around him. It’s all a very gray area.

The man who murdered Chris Kyle (American Sniper) was a veteran. By all accounts he was mentally ill and in crisis. In hindsight, I think most of us would prefer that he had not possessed or been around firearms as he was clearly not stable. However, had the police or authorities in Texas acted proactively to remove his firearms it would have been viewed as tyranny by many.

Mental illness and firearms is never one of those things where you hear about (or even know) the successes in policy. The only exposure we get is due to the failures and then it is Monday morning QB’d to death. You also never hear about the thousands of people struggling with mental illness who are not mass murderers or violent towards others.

Prayers for all those grieving today from such a horrific loss.

"We will have to wait and find out what the history of this man was, but absent what I wrote above he would be allowed to exercise his 2A rights and purchase a firearm."

That will almost certainly be the case, although I hope I'm wrong because that will make this all that much easier.

But, I have a feeling we'll find out he's nuts, everyone in his family understood he was nuts and nobody did anything to protect society from him. There may be defensible reasons for that inaction, likely having to do with the difficulty of treating the mentally ill who don't wish to be treated.

What I'm saying, is we need to change the laws to make it harder for the mentally unfit to wield firearms. And again, I would argue that the definition of 'mentally unfit' needs to carefully and very narrowly tailored. I'm not talking about depressed or bi-polar people, for instance. Instead, I'm talking about the mentally diseased who occupy a realm that only exists in their own mind, the truly psychotic.

The worst thing about limiting rights to people with mental problems is that a lot of them will stop treatment or never go in the first place.

In the end, it needs to be pretty hard to strip rights away. Especially once you’re ‘in recovery’ or ‘debt paid’. To me at least.

If there is confirmation from officials that he was the suspect I have not seen it.

I listened to the dispatch audio (it was interesting) and the description was 5’8, heavy build, with a beard.

They were not treating him as a suspect and from the helicopter footage there was no escort of the ambulance to the hospital that I saw despite over 100 patrol cars and officers being on scene. I assume one or two officers could have ridden in the ambulance with him, but normal procedure would be to escort the ambulance to the hospital for someone in custody who just killed multiple people including a cop.

Normal procedure for a mass shooting is also to detain or secure possible suspects for additional investigation. If you met the description of the suspect that would almost be certain. That man is completely cooperative and he is talking to both officers as he is walked out under his own power.

There is a witness video from a young man where he describes him from a short distance away as an “old fat guy”.

I don’t know if I am right or wrong, but it might be prudent as I stated to wait for more information before we assume this man was the 21 year old shooter.

We have to be careful what we wish for and make sure the solution is not worse than the problem.

How do you grant bureaucrats or even law enforcement the authority and ability to strip a constitutional right? If we learned anything after January 6, it is that many of our leaders and “officials” view half of us as mentally ill because we supported the other candidate.

This is a dangerous slope FRiend and one we should not embark upon easily.

Also keep in mind that as I wrote above, many who weigh in on these issues have an agenda that is more important than the specific circumstances of any incident.

This is the danger when people acquiesce to infringements on any amendment to include the 2nd. Some might have good motives and each of us would like to see a system that might prevent a homicidal person with mental illness from having guns, but the devil is in the details.

When the devil has ulterior motives you might end up being prohibited as a threat because your politics and personal views and ethos differs from those of the totalitarian left.
