A volcano has erupted in Iceland about 40km (25 miles) from the capital Reykjavik, the Icelandic meteorological office has said, as a red cloud lit up the night sky and a no-fly zone was established in the area.
“Volcanic eruption has begun in Fagradalsfjall,” it said in a tweet on Friday night, referring to a mountain located about 30km south-west of the capital. Police and coastguard officials raced to the scene late on Friday and the public has been advised to stay away from the area.

Thanks! ;D
“They are saying this could be bigger than Mt. Pinatobu in the Phillippines.”
I doubt that and whoever said it simply do not know. It is a fissure eruption at this point BUT, BUT, BUT, the Laki eruption which lasted for months and ended in 1784-feb and pumped so much sulfur dioxide gas up into the atmosphere that it caused thousands of deaths worldwide. Matter of fact, there are estimates that the thing caused the largest catastrophic death rate of any volcano in written history. It took out over 20% of Icelands population..that they do know.
And it was a VEI 4...
Holy Moses!
Laki most likely killed more people than all those combined.
Like this one, Laki was a fissure eruption. It lasted from June 1783 till Feb 1784. Pumped so much gas into the air it cause sulfur dioxide fogs worldwide.
Iceland is infamous for fissure eruptions. The ground simply splits apart from the shifting plates and they keep going and going and going on and on and on.
Interesting - I need to read up on the jet stream and Dalton min theory
We’re going to need a better mask ....
Tell your pets how lucky they are to live in America. If we lived in a Nordic country all we would talk about fish and fjords.
At least I can pronounce this one, not like Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

Obviously due to climate change.
My admitted shortcoming in post 37 are certainly no fault of your Father’s. While I can say that I wish that he had attempted to expose me to Service, I both have my doubts about how much affect it would have had, and would not have wanted to compromise the composition section of his teaching at all.
I did not know that there was a Canadian aspect to your family’s experiences. My contact with the Canadian west, alas, is very limited.
Things to make you go “Hmmmmmn.”
I’m not buying it completely, but it is a theory. There are very compelling records of a 1000 year climate change cycle. If a 3600 hundred year comet storm is superimposed on that cycle, you’d get “interesting “ amplification sometimes, and flatter curve effects sometimes.

Great pics at the link. I don't think those locals are too worried.
The US is moving towards socialism.
If it keeps going, I’d much rather live in a more socialist Iceland, than a slightly less socialist USA.
Check out the demographics, and thus crime.
If memory serves, mom was more influential in introducing us to RS.She read it aloud so that my younger siblings could get some appreciation of it.
I did not know that Service had misspelled Lake Laberge.
I typed “thar” but my phone thought it knew better and changed it to “that.”
... Mt Tambora in 1815It also created the circumstances that led to Boris Karloff becoming a household name.Changed history - 1816 had cold summer, starvation, etc. Affected migrations in US as well. New Englander’s began migrations to Midwest
