Meat In or Meat Out? Several rural Colorado communities reject Gov. Polis’ proclamation

WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Saturday marks Colorado’s first ever “Meat Out Day”, a proclamation ushered in by Gov. Jared Polis to encourage people to explore the benefits of plant-based diets. But not everyone is happy about the concept. An estimated two dozen rural counties are rejecting the proclamation, celebrating “Meat In Day” instead.

Weld Co. commissioners say they feel like the governor’s proclamation is an insult to Colorado’s ranchers and farmers, noting that Weld Co. brings in about $2 billion in agricultural revenue each year. Commissioners estimate that 85% of the county’s agricultural revenue comes largely from livestock and poultry sales.

“We do hundreds of these proclamations. We’d love to have Colorado beef appreciation day,” shared Polis when asked about the the proclamation during a Covid-19 update last month. “One of my quarantine hobbies was learning to really develop techniques around cooking some of the underappreciated cuts, including flanks and round steak. I would put my brisket against anybody’s brisket in the state.”

Weld Co. officials say about 50 “Meat In Day” events are planned around the county on Saturday.

Is this like “Meat Out for Harambe”?

Important to have your "meat in" before zipping up.

“One of my quarantine hobbies was learning to really develop techniques around cooking some of the underappreciated cuts, including flanks and round steak.”

Sounds like a very nice hobby.

Especially doing the ‘round steak’ with his ‘partner’.

States that have a history of ranching, hunting, fishing and the outdoors have clowns like Polis as Governors. Talk to real ‘Coloradoans’ and you’ll learn very quickly that it isn’t about skiing and snowboarding. That’s for all the transplants.

Coloradoans are all about the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Shame 2 or 3 cities in that state have destroyed it. Like so many others.

I’d take him up on his Brisket Challenge, he seems like someone who cooks it to a Roast Beef texture.

That’s why I put ‘thesmellofmoney’ in the keywords. Weld County is basically one big feedlot, and the smell gets pretty strong sometimes. And people say, ‘That’s the smell of money!’

Everybody knows Pontius Polis doesn’t “eat” the meat.....He just tongue-toys with it.

Meanwhile I just had some homemade pork green chili with eggs & hashbrowns this morning.

So he can go to hell.

The governor of a state where cattle ranching is a major industry proclaims a “meat-out” day? Brilliant!

This is great, thanks for posting this! I was just about to head out to a meeting, and then the grocery store. Kind of wondering what to make for dinner tonight and tomorrow night. Now I know - something with meat! In fact it is going to be warm enough tomorrow I think I’ll grill. That way I can share the aroma of disobedience with the entire neighborhood. I’m thinking pork chops tonight, and either steak or burgers tomorrow night.

Agreed; cows, sheep, goats, deer, elk, etcetera all eat plants, we eat them.

Sounds like a fair tradeoff to me!
