But maybe so. David Goldman foresees China vastly outstripping America because it is a merciless meritocracy whereas America increasingly is at war with that very idea (the NFL and other sports leagues excepted). America will no longer offer, as an alternative to China, “a democratic meritocracy that rewards achievement while honoring the rights of the individual.” And since “meritocracy will win, because it always does, and all the more so in a high-tech, winner-take-all world,” the Chinese version of it — “a merciless meritocracy that treats the losers like so much detritus” — will prevail in the absence of a different version.
I was particularly struck by this passage in Goldman’s piece:
China graduates six times as many STEM students as we do. A third of undergrads major in engineering vs 5%-6% in the U.S. China’s educational system, to be sure, favors the grind who memorizes exam answers over the maverick who asks deep questions. As we turn our schools into ideological indoctrination centers, though, what kind of creative minds will survive them?
U.S. education, at least at the K-12 level, has long been less rigorous not just than China’s but than that of advanced European nations, too. Our competitive advantage has been the fostering of creativity and at the university level.
But, as Goldman makes clear, that advantage is being squandered by ideological indoctrination, including at universities. This probably means we will be left disadvantaged across the board. And, if so, probably doomed.

Part One? America is doomed. End of Story.
I know Bill Maher is a liberal, but every now and then he gets some things right.
This is one of them:
They state it like it might be a future event. With the blatant theft of a Presidential election and the blatant theft of multiple Senate seats with no blowback, America ended 3 Nov 2020. We are no in the post-Republic transformation and power consolidation.
The CCP is enormously corrupt, and China is following the same policy as Japan did: mercantilist, export driven growth in some industries so their profits subsidize grossly inefficient and corrupt industries in other areas.
Decouple and the CCP will have to deal with tens of millions very unhappy unemployed Chinese.
Why yes, yes we are.
China a meritocracy? lol. Maybe in an intellectual piracy sort of way. They aren’t catching up to the US. The US is falling to their level.
Import the 3rd world, become the 3rd world
Bannon played it this morning, once in a great while Maher does get it right. I liked his stand on allowing Arabs to over run America.
Seems it really got going in 2008.
I’m very sorry to say.
All that the Left take for granted, they are trying to destroy. But, they know (in their minds) that they are smarter (Romans 1:22) so it’s all going to be better. Or so they think.
China is a meritocracy? Then what is Hong Kong fighting against?
The moment of doom will be the day the US dollar no longer is the world reserve currency. That will herald the day the Federal Reserve can no longer create money out of thin air.
“But, they know (in their minds) that they are smarter (Romans 1:22) so it’s all going to be better. Or so they think.”
I think they don’t care if it’s better. They know they will be in charge, and that’s really all that matters. Those in charge will live well, no matter what.
Our death certificate was signed on the dotted line on November 3rd 2020.....

Lol. Mkay.
Oops May
Did you mean "autocracy"? Merit? Hardly.
The Chinese and European governments should insist on treaty-based financial supervision rights over federal spending as a condition of continued dollar acceptance by the Bank of China and the ECB.
Biden and the Democrats will happily spend trillions of dollars until wallpaper becomes more valuable than dollars.
The Bretton Woods agreement had a fatal flaw: lack of an end date. Setting the US Dollar as the world’s reserve currency should have been gradually phased out, returning to gold.
Probably far to late now to do so now. All the decline we have seen in our country in the modern era can be traced back to the inevitable misuse of the dollar that Breton Woods caused.
