CNN’s Harwood on Biden: ‘All Americans Have Been Missing’ a President Who Conveys Empathy

CNN’s White House correspondent John Harwood said Friday on “New Day” that President Joe Biden’s speech on the coronavirus pandemic conveyed empathy which “all Americans have been missing” in their president.

Harwood said, “I think a spiking the football is the last thing that President Biden wanted to do. What was notable about the speech was the appeal to universal values. It was striking in the way that the president conveys empathy in unadorned language, trying to appeal to the common experiences that all Americans have been missing during this pandemic. Appealing to them for assistance.”

Biden’s speech struck me as the petty, narcissistic effort of a small, graceless man. He’s the Rosie Ruiz of the pandemic, cutting in near the finish line and claiming victory.

I agree. Some people on this thread seem to be conceding too much, i.e., that Trump had no empathy, and Biden does. Trump empathized with the American people, the American worker, and the American soldier. Obama was a cold fish, and Biden is a fraud. Biden's speech last night was the hollow statement of a petty, vindictive, dishonest man.

There is a very good reason to care what Harwood thinks not because he is worthy of our respect because he is on to something as is Biden, or rather his speechwriters. The first third of Biden's speech was almost certainly written by a woman or a team staffed with women who were writing for a segment of the population that constitutes a large chunk of the base of the Democrat party. We have been concerned about the power of the Democrats to sway females, especially white suburban educated females toward their party. They might have cost us the last two elections.

They win them over with empathy. If Biden's speech was more in the nature of an appeal to the heart rather than to the mind that is because it was intentionally so. Governing as soap opera works, it wins votes.

It matters not that Biden's appeals to unity were hollow even grossly hypocritical when, for example, when he failed to credit Trump for pushing the vaccine through in record time. It matters only that women wanted to hear an appeal to end discord, to bring the country to a place utterly foreign to politics but heavenly To Hallmark television viewers. The world of politics is not the world of unity but the world conflict. That is as it should be. Politics is where we decide who gets what, where and when and in many cases it is a zero-sum game. Biden has been at this game for very nearly half a century and he knows how to use a stiletto but he also knows, thanks to his female speechwriters, how to soothe.

The contrast with Trump could not be more plain, Trump was right, Biden is lying but with suburban women Biden carries the day.

A reporter or blogger. Can’t remember which, went to a college campus and gave students a whole list of racist statements, and asked “who said these things?” And they all answered “Trump?”, and began getting visibly angry at Trump after they answered, accusing him of all kin d s of nonsense.

The interviewer stopped them and said “nope it was h
Biden”. The interviewees looked embarrassed for a minute, then began giving excuses for Biden, excusing all the racist things he said.

And that is a perfect example of the totally disingenuous liberals in America. They can say all kinds of nonsense about Trump to our faces, but you hit them with facts, and they shut you off and tell you that politics is “off ljmits” as a subject (after they have slandered Republicans of course).

Ruiz infamously jumped into the 1980 Boston Marathon in the final stretch of the race and claimed the women’s win ahead of the true champion, Jacqueline Gareau of Québec. She crossed the finish line, receiving medical attention for a supposedly injured ankle, and her bar code was recorded as a finisher. That gave her a Boston qualification for 1980. Her employer, thrilled by her result, paid her expenses to go to Boston.

What empathy has he demonstrated when he lied about the entire 11 months when his predecessor was working tirelessly to develop medical supplies: masks; ventilators; bandages, hospital beds - an entire ship outfitted with beds that Governor Cuomo ignored, etc., government regulations regarding development of a vaccine adjusted to the seriousness of the Covid-19 situation, Biden is to be pities in his senility - but there is no excuse for him to repeatedly downplay and berate his predecessor’s hard work for the US citizens to keep us safe.
