Electric Vehicles Are the U.S. Auto Industry’s Future—If Dealers Can Figure Out How to Sell Them
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 7, 2021 | Nora Naughton |

Car dealer Brad Sowers is spending money to prepare for the coming wave of new electric models from General Motors Co. He is installing charging stations, upgrading service bays and retraining staff at his St. Louis-area dealership to handle the technology-packed vehicles.

But when he considers how many plug-in Chevy Bolts he sold last year—nine, out of the nearly 4,000 Chevrolets sold at his Missouri dealerships—it gives him pause.

“The consumer in the middle of America just isn’t there yet,” when it comes to switching to electric vehicles, he said, citing the long distances many of his customers drive daily and a lack of charging infrastructure outside major cities.

As auto executives and investors buzz about the coming age of the electric car, many dealers say they are struggling to square that enthusiasm with the reality today on new-car sales lots, where last year battery-powered vehicles made up fewer than 2% of U.S. auto sales.

Most consumers who come to showrooms aren’t shopping for electric cars, and with gasoline prices relatively low, even hybrid models can be a tough sell, dealers and industry analysts say.

Auto makers are moving aggressively to expand their electric-vehicle offerings with dozens of new models set to arrive in coming years. Some like GM are setting firm targets for when they plan to phase out gas-powered cars entirely.

Facts are on my side. One electric car that works does not equate millions. You’ve not addressed some other major issues as well. Enjoy your car. Hopefully they leave the rest of us alone.

What facts? What major issues?

Millions of EV’S are already on the road. Sedans, SUV’s, pickups and semis.

Performance is similar to or better than ICE vehicles.

“What fuel savings?? Between the high cost the vehicle itself and the fact that EV’s get about the same cost per mile as a gas vehicle, there is no savings.”

Throw in a million mile warranty and greatly reduced maintenance expense and downtime.

White liberal “elites” have forced on us:...

Washing machines that use so little water cloths reek of detergent...

Toilets that don’t flush properly...

Dish washers that take three hours to wash a load - then do it badly...

All in the name of ‘motha earf’...

And the white liberal ‘elites’? Their maids and butlers do the work on the horrible sh*t they create for the little people - or they pay thousands more than most people can afford ... We should ask Michael Moore... Yeah, and they love those electric cars - for their third car...

Sounds like you have an interesting take on this. Why would the left sabotage their own program for outlawing vehicles unless they’re electric?

It's all to make Americans as miserable as possible all while making it more expensive for the average Joe.

What's ironic with these people, as they tell Americans to use less fuel, use less electricity, use less water etc, they turn around and encourage and even aid and abet millions more illegal aliens to flood into our country, all of whom use up more and more of our resources which we're told to use less of.

In Maine the electric rate is already about 20 cents per kwh. That includes the electricity and distribution charges.

I was watching some stupid show where the Tesla gets stuck on a muddy road in the mountains of Montana. It had California license plates.

They're going to have a rough time convincing rural folk to buy electric powered vehicles, where distances, weather and terrain can be punishing for even gas powered vehicles.

I would love to get a new hybrid vehicle, but I get between 32 and 36mpg now... and the car is paid for. The Ford escape hybrid is very nice.

You're right dragnet. Also the 'elites' ways to sticking it to Americans isn't even helping 'motha earf'... people wash their clothes twice, they wash dishes by hand (using 50 to 100 times more water than the old dishwashers)... it's just evil.

Now these white liberal elites want us to die of covid or destroy our neighborhoods so THEY can feel superior about their 'caring' for the downtrodden? Yes, it's easy to hate these people... the 'elites'...

“Sounds like you have an interesting take on this.”

When you really look at the mining operations you know that a few scavenging kids are really not part of the supply chain.

Amazing how many ‘conservatives’ latch onto this leftist agenda fake video.

Batteries require DC current for charging, while the grid is AC. How large would an inverter be that could deliver enough DC current to charge an EV in ten minutes, and are such thigs even practical?

Read the comment. They don’t work for golf carts in a large area where travel of several miles is expected.

Nope. I also have a close to 200 mph 750 hp car.

Which EV can go 500 miles on a 20 minute recharge? Hmmm????

That's not what they said. Try reading it again.

But to answer your question, and to use the Tesla Model S as an example, you can get 200-250 miles-worth of charge (50% of 400-520 mile capacity, depending on model) in 20 minutes on a Tesla Supercharger, which is what is available on the rural routes.

So you got yourself an overpriced little toy. Not very helpful when the discussion was about a work vehicle that earns money every minute it’s wheels are turning and loses money every minute they’re not.
