Neither side has the appetite for all-out war but experts fear their intense strategic competition in which both conduct carefully calculated tests of the other's resolve could spill over into violent confrontation. And US military expert Lyle Goldstein warned there was a solid chance the US could lose the first fight with the People's Liberation Army in the event of a full-on conflict.
Prof Goldstein from the Naval War College's China Maritime Studies Institute in Newport, Rhode Island, told Newsweek: "It is very plausible to say there is no guarantee of victory in the first phases."
He said scenarios for such a confrontation varied substantially but warned all "are extremely challenging" for US forces.
He said: "I think China now has adequate forces, including air, missile, electronic warfare, spec ops, naval, undersea and nuclear to likely prevail in the first phase and perhaps in subsequent phases too."
He said weaponry had a "quite important" role but said China would gain the upper hand because of its favourable geography, greater will and the willingness to strike first."

Chomo Joe has their back. China has NOTHING to worry about with that short eyed pervert in office.
Meh. They would be fighting Biden’s military of pussies, trannies and faggots.
Yep, I agree. Tried to explain that to a lot of folks in the
mid to late 90s.
Well, here we are. They worked their magic.
China has built a lot of fallout and blast shelters and has been hoarding all kinds of resources for a long time, including metals. I remember articles from around a decade ago or more about China storing unusually large amounts of copper, energy resources and other materials.
In an unrestricted war, no way China wins. Not even remotely possible.
Now having our politicians surrender or actively impede our military is a real possibility. But a war fought like WWII, ie Americans behind the effort, no way we loose to China.
A nuclear attack on the US would be suicidal for the PRC. Not to say they won’t do it if they back themselves into a corner as Japan did.
The current US military reminds me of the per WW 2 Soviet Army which had been stripped of competent war fighting officers to install toadies for Stalin. We have almost the exact same thing in the US military now with the pansy Generals and Admirals who think color and origin are the most important aspects of war fighting. (Retired Army Officer)
A nuclear exchange won’t likely end a war. The war will instead go more conventional and high intensity with unprecedented recruitment and training. That’s why governments keep estimates of the reservoir of able bodied manpower for war. Movies produced in western countries about nuclear war have perpetuated leftist/globalist myths, probably paid for by free traitors. They don’t want anything to disturb their markets.
We could send a couple of missiles into the Three Gorges Dam and deal a severe blow to the Chinese economy.
China and the Biden Admin against the US military
Yes, they think long term. We just want out cheap sneakers today.
Although that would be an economic blow to China, the political fallout from the humanitarian devastation that would result would isolate the U.S. amongst its allies. China also generates most of their power on Coal, so the production harm would be negligible. Cutting off trade due to an embargo would be far more devastating, however since China is the world’s largest producer of rear earth metals and lithium, an embargo would cause significant harm on our economy as well. A better tactic, IMO, would be to sink their navy as quickly as possible, then block them from invading our allies to their west. Isolate them, systematically dismantle their infrastructure and production from the air, then invade. It worked in WWII and Iraq, and that tactic would work in this case, just the scale would be much larger.
More faux news.
And we would be trading with this rogue nation why??
Another war brought about by the CIA.
