Pay Cuts, Taxes, Child Care: What Another Year of Remote Work Will Look Like
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Feb. 28, 2021 | Chip Cutter and Emily Glazer

Posted on 02/28/2021 5:29:11 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Companies are anticipating another largely remote work year, and new questions about compensation and benefits are weighing on managers.

Discussions about the future of work, such as whether to reduce the salaries of employees who have left high-cost cities, are priority items in board meetings and senior executive sessions across industries, according to chief executives, board members and corporate advisers.

Among the questions companies are trying to resolve: Who should shoulder tax costs as employees move to new locations while working remotely? And what is the most effective way to support working parents?

Companies say there is much at stake, from the happiness and productivity of employees to regulatory consequences, if they get these decisions wrong.

Employees’ relocations to new cities, states and countries have companies and workers grappling with tax concerns.

Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees last year that, beginning in January, the company would use its virtual private network, or VPN, that employees use to access company systems to determine where they were working for tax purposes.

At issue is whether workers who told Facebook they left locations such as California and New York—and therefore shouldn’t pay state and local income tax—had really moved, according to a person familiar with the matter. Also, if an employee has moved to another state or city where there are local income taxes, both the company and worker could be held accountable for not paying them.

My son-in-law’s employer (a big outfit, you’d recognize the name) is cutting their office space by 50% in favor of work at home based on the experience of 2020.

Depends on the nature of the work. If it's a call center or some sort, I can see why you would want to cut office space. But there are a lot of jobs where it depends on interaction with your fellow co-workers and you just can't duplicate that kind of experience over Zoom.

Surprisingly it’s engineering and manufacturing.
I don’t have a clue how they do it these days.

At least they've removed the danger of seeing Jeffrey Toobin's junk from Zoom...

The same way they always have, only with masks, temp. scans, sign in sheets, opposed shifts, social distance, departmental lockdowns and a lot of hand sanitizer.

Can’t do some jobs for home.
(I have one of those jobs)

I live at small but popular ski area in rural Idaho and the change this year is very apparent. It appears many who can work remotely and are smart, have rented locally for months and are ripping off their employers. They are all here every single morning, every day of the week and leave by noon to get on line and work. I kind of respect them because from my observations they are all very good skiers and have take full advantage of the situation.

I guess any work must be done in a cube farm with a mandatory 2-hour commute both ways to qualify as work in your book?

No one will notice. Just send an early morning email to "check in". Then get everything done after lunch like you said.

Any job that can be done remotely will be done in India for a fraction of the price.

There have been measurable productivity increases and massive cost reductions that have come from remote work. Which is what a lot of people like me in IT have been saying for decades.

A company that makes big green tractors has random checks through the day to make sure you are working.

They are also moving a lot to Poland, Mexico, and India.

There’s no reason the paper pushers, beancounters, etc., need to be working on site at the lab or factory.

I teach remotely. I will not step back into the college classroom until the mask and other PPE equipment mandate is lifted.

Good luck getting Indian scumbags state certification approval for teaching (even at the college level in some states there is). Not going to happen. And students won’t put up listening to the very not-understandable at all Indian “English” accent with out dropping the class and seeking refunds.

Actually you can duplicate almost any collaberation using Zoom or Teams or for the moment Skype.

BUT it takes a lot longer than walking over to Joe’s cubicle and asking “can you walk me through that setp sequence?” or shoulder hop Mary while she reprodruces that bug.

Companies have to figure on losing productivity, maybe as much as 30%

Definitely. There were employees working remotely before covid-19 and there will always be employees working remotely.
