NIH Director Says ‘Overdoing It’ With Masking Is Better than Not Doing Enough
epoch times ^ | 25 February A.D. 2021 | Tom Ozimek

Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said Wednesday that given the relative lack of certainty about the protection provided by COVID-19 vaccines, it is better to go overboard on masking up than not do enough to help curb the spread of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus.

Collins made the remarks in an interview on Fox Business Network’s “Cavuto: Coast to Coast,” in which he said getting a vaccine may provide people with a false sense of security.

He said that, even after people have been vaccinated, “we don’t know exactly whether it’s still possible for that person to carry the virus. It might be, and until we have better data, then masks are still important.”

Wearing masks helps minimize asymptomatic spread more generally, he said, as people may be infected with the virus but have no idea as they have no symptoms.

“The only way we’re going to keep such individuals, and it might be any of us, from spreading this is if they’re careful about wearing that mask. It’s not about protecting themselves as much as it is protecting everybody from them,” Collins said.

He acknowledged the drudgery of mask-wearing, but urged people to do it regardless of their level of comfort.

“I know people are tired of them. I’m tired of them too,” he said. “But, at the same time, it’s a simple measure. It’s a life-saving medical device. Just put it on. Even if we’re overdoing it, that’s fine. Better that than run the risk of infecting more people.”

The COVID-19 vaccines are still relatively new, and researchers have not yet been able to study how long the protection they provide can last, Collins wrote in a recent blog post that explored the issue of how protective a single dose is. Health officials recommend that, with both Pfizer’s and Moderna’s vaccines, people get two doses. But a recent study that Collins cited suggests that people who have already had COVID-19 may have an immune response following a single dose that is equal to—or even greater—than after the second dose. The findings are preliminary and the study has not yet been peer reviewed.

“For now, the most important thing all of us can all do to get this terrible pandemic under control is to follow the 3 W’s—wear our masks, wash our hands, watch our distance from others—and roll up our sleeves for the vaccine as soon as it’s available to us,” Collins wrote.

Earlier this week, in an interview with “Axios on HBO,” Collins lamented that mask-wearing had become a political hot potato.

“The evidence was pretty compelling by last March or April that uniform wearing of masks would reduce transmission of this disease. And yet, with a variety of messages through a variety of sources, mask wearing became a statement about your political party or an invasion of your personal freedom,” he said.

A mask “is nothing more than a life-saving medical device, and yet it got categorized in all sorts of other ways that were not factual, not scientific and, frankly, dangerous,” he said, arguing that politicization of mask-wearing may have accelerated the spread of COVID-19 and so contributed to the deaths of “tens of thousands.”

Overdoing it with wishes on eyelashes and birthday candles won’t change a thing.

Multiple masks are the same.

If there is ZERO gain, it is not BETTER than not doing it.

Do you guys really think like this or do you just troll for kicks? It just baffles me. Seriously, not trying to be a jerk about it, but REALLY?

Health care professionals have historically only worn masks for very short periods of time and they are never reused. OSHA has respiratory protection rules for industrial folks wearing masks and they are pretty stringent. NONE of what is going on now is comparable to ANYTHING that has gone on in the past.

Government is rarely the answer to anything and only makes matters worse. Without government and Karens, Covid 19 would be in the rear view. I know even on here we have Covid sycophants who want to lecture.

What...science has a “ lack of certainty” about vaccines?

If you’re a surgeon, anesthesiologist, or operating room nurse doing significant procedures, it’s not just a “short period of time”, and there are folks who do that five days a week for decades.

That should be an excellent control sample.

The "life saving medical device" did nothing to stop the explosion in cases and deaths in the last four months. California, the mask Nazi and lockdown state, has surpassed NY in deaths. Masks made the spread worse!!

Exactly so. Then there is the virtue signalling of wearing a mask. “I Care, therefore I wear”.

Easy new rule:

Democrats and Fearbros need to double diaper. Lethal pneumonia and bacterial infections are issues they should ignore.

Freedom lovers can choose to do whatever they want to do.

Who is telling you to do that?
I have 3M N95 masks I use in my shop.
There was a shortage of them for a while in the first months of the panic but the supply lines are filled back up.

Why should I pay for your masks? That seems like a very odd statement for a person on FR.

If you don’t want to wear masks, don’t wear them.

At least around here (Indiana) all the mask signs are still up but nobody really cares anymore. Covid fatigue has set in.

My employer buys Chinese masks for covid. I don’t wear them.

Masks don’t help anyway, see post 26. I’ve been fit tested for respirators per OSHA standards my whole career. Mask hygiene is horrible, practically no one uses them properly.

Proper use of masks as PPE would be; sterile gloves on, clean mask on, do your thing, take mask off and put in garbage, take gloves off and put in garbage.
Repeat with each mask use.

Here’s a study about how viruses spread through “bring your own bag”. Covid spread that same way with masks. https://www.neha.org/node/60021

Uh... what’s the risk that now-suppressed findings that masking causes brain damage were correct?

So you’re slowly killing yourself by not being able to exhale and clear your lungs and take in fresh.

“Masks made the spread worse!! “

BINGO.

COVID droplets can survive on FABRIC for up to three days.

So that face diaper is carrying COVID around everywhere you go.

But wait, there’s more:

Chew on this:

There is a lot of REAL science indicating that COVID—like cruise ship noroviruses—is spread primarily be fecal to oral transmission.

Let that sink in.

Remember about a year ago when there were a few quickly buried stories about communities in the New England states that were going to start testing sewerage for COVID?

Let that sink in.

Now consider this: In many States (Pennsylvania and Ohio for sure) the mask mandates are explicit that those in restaurants MUST wear a mask INTO THE RESTROOM where of course that cloth will absorb all toilet odors and other zhit.

Let that sink in.

Then the patron MUST wear the zhit laden mask back into the restaurant so that with every exhale the patrons innocently eating pancakes can get a dose of the restroom zhit.

Let that sink in.

Still hungry for a meal out?

Even if we’re overdoing it, that’s fine.

This sounds scientific.
