ERCOT officials spent 40 seconds on winter storm preparedness at Feb. 9 meeting
The Austin American-Statesman ^ | February 19, 2021 | by Madlin Mekelburg

During their last meeting ahead of the winter storm that left millions of Texans without electricity and potable water for days on end, top officials at the state electric grid operator spent less than one minute discussing the impending storm and whether the state was prepared.

Bill Magness, president and chief executive officer of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, spoke briefly about the winter weather during his report to the board at the Feb. 9 meeting, the only mention of the incoming storm during the public portion of the virtual meeting, which spanned two hours, 28 minutes.

Magness spoke about the approaching cold front for about 40 seconds:

“It is actually going to be winter here pretty soon. As those of you in Texas know, we do have a cold front coming this way. We’ll probably see our winter peak later this week or in the very early part of next week. And Operations has issued an operating condition notice just to make sure everyone is up to speed with their winterization and we’re ready for the several days of pretty frigid temperatures to come our way.

“So more on that in the next couple of days, but it does look like we’ll have a little bit of winter weather to contend with during the course of the rest of this week. We do have a cold front coming this way.”

As recently as one month ago, operators at ERCOT offered a positive assessment about the preparedness of Texas power plants for winter storms, according to an American-Statesman report.

In an Extreme Weather Reliability Assessment filed Jan. 15 with the Texas Public Utility Commission, ERCOT wrote that a “review of plants indicates that the majority of plants are following their weatherization plans.”

*** Old news. ***

Yes, and labeled as such. VIRTUAL winterization inspections, and NOT mandatory got my attention.

Let me know when the virtual vehicle inspections for my yearly auto tag begins.

Why bother to make sense and find the real ROOT cause instead of just the branches?

/s

Well said on your part.

The failure is a cascade of failures stemming from Green Energy and Green Mandates without one whit of consideration for knock on effects.

The wild swings of wind energy and the requirements to use that power when available makes gas supplied electricity the whipping boy forced to throttle up and down constantly at the whim of the wind. Engines such as gas power plants were just not meant to run that way.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Every single ERCOT official does, however, need to be ripped and replaced, and there needs to be a residency requirement so that they are required to experience the consequences of their decisions.

Yup. I grew up in Nebraska and we had a coal furnace. Never had pipes break and all the kids knew how to stoke the furnace and carry out ashes. I don’t want to go back to that but it sounded good when we were freezing here in TX.

Is it a routine practice to have a brand new member of the board he elected as chairman? I would think it would be better to have a new member serve for a while to find out what the Board is all about.

During the meeting, members approved minor consent agenda items and heard reports from ERCOT’s Finance and Audit Committee and the Human Resources and Governance Committee, in addition to remarks by Magness.

I wonder how long the report from the Human resources committee was.

After spending one minute on prep for cold weather , they went on so spend a balance of the meeting on their diversity goals and crt training plans.

Those are very good comments, and I had to think about them for a while because they seemed intriguing. I did decide that I would rather have those positions be appointed rather than political.

Having listened to the February 9 meeting. I realized that those positions are technical. They require someone knowledgeable in the industry who is willing to think and act in order to ensure the industry continues to operate exceptionally for the next 10-20 years. The day-to-day stuff, like this weather event, should be managed by the ERCOT employees.

I do not think it in our best interests to have these roles filled by politicians that are too busy shaking hands, raising money for their next campaign, and running to the news cameras to get an appearance on the Sunday shows. Do you?

Looks like the next meeting is scheduled for February 24, and I will be sure to watch it, too. It will be enlightening to see how the board reacts to this event.

Is there a way to winterize Natural gas wellheads to prevent them from freezing up in extreme cold. The limited natural gas delivery caused problems for homes and businesses that heat by natural gas. Heat in an office, plant, or school building in extreme cold is vital to prevent the pressurized fire suppression pipes from bursting.

Add to that, no heat in an all electric home, because natural gas flow has been restricted to power generation plants, because of frozen natural gas wellheads.

And then, there’s the power generation plants, of all kinds, that need to be winterized.

That’s my 2 1/2 cents...

This has been twice removed from the website. I looked back at the wayback machine from the original URL and the page worked, but the links did not.

Now it is back at:

In charge? “Ms.” Sally Talberg

Look at her bio? Does that tell you what you wanted to know?

That was not the problem.

ERCOT had the power shut off for some NG compressing stations which were feeding the power plants generating the electicity which made central heating and cooling systems work.

Most places had NG where it was normally available, but no AC power to run the control system and the fans for the central heating and air conditioning system.

Wind Power, Abbott wanted Texas to be a leader in “renewables” mainly wind. Trouble is that wind is not reliable so there needs to be a backup for wind. So that when winds fails to produce power there is a fossil fuel plant to pick up the lack. Texas did not have that backup. I would suggest building a modern safe nuke plant.

ERCOT does need to alter their pricing advantage for subsidized wind so more reliable fossil fuels can stay competitive.

Bump!

Yes it was a problem to have a rolling blackout that lasts for an hour or so

BS, It was not a "rolling blackout" It was a hard blackout that lasted days. I was without power for 48 hours with temps in the teens. I have friends that when without power for 3 days. Rolling black out my a$$.

ERCOT order the rolling blackouts, but it’s the individual power generation companies, that do the blackouts, and those blackouts were mis-managed by those power generation companies. And that needs to be investigated by the Legislature.

In those first two days, Monday and Tuesday, my power was out for 16 hours, 6:30 hours, 6:45 hours, 2:30 hours, and then by 4pm on Tuesday Feb. 16th, “regular” rolling blackouts for 30-45 minutes.

Uninterrupted power returned by Wednesday at 11am.

The NG industry in Texas dropped the ball in not getting all of it’s players, that rely on electricity to operate, to get signed up on the TDUs, (like Oncor), on their “Critical Infrastructure” List, so that if and when rolling blackouts or other electrical outages are forced, that these players are not left with out power.

An example of such NG players are: NG power stations, Texas NG compressing stations, and Texas NG refiners. Many well heads are heated by electricity, instead of NG, because, for the environment, electricity heat is cleaner than NG. Which is another way to say, that to save the environment, we almost lost the Power Grid, and if that had happened, the disruption of many things could have caused the death of thousands...
