A metal structure that mysteriously appeared on a roundabout in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been destroyed over fears about its origins.

People in the capital, Kinshasa, stoned and torched the 12ft (3.7m) triangular prism that looked like other metal monoliths that have cropped up around the world over the last few months.

It had begun to draw selfie-takers, which fuelled rumours on social media.

Some feared it was satanic or put there by aliens or by a secret cabal.

Looks like one of those guerrilla art metal monolith installations didn't go over so well in DR Congo (f.k.a. Zaïre)...

It looks pretty flimsy. Also interesting that many in the Congo have smart phones.

These monoliths are popping up all around the world. Nobody knows why.

If there have been more than one of these, it is no longer a Monolith.

People seem to think everyone on the continent of Africa lives in huts or shanties.

I always think of the Ali-Foreman fight in Kinshasa, when it was still called “Zaire”. And they asked Ali his thoughts on Africa now that he’s been there, his answer: “Thank God my granddaddy got on that boat!”

And of course the only monolith to be physically attacked was in Africa.

The Smart phone has massively shrunk the world. I’ve spoken with missionaries about it.

30 years ago, I knew a guy who was the first white man to ever enter a remote village in Papua New Guinea.

They had zero contact with the outside world before that...ever.

Fast forward to today. Just about every village in the world has smart phones. They skipped right over wired communications and went right to wireless.

The phones and minutes are usually free in exchange for pop up ads.

Like much of the media, it seems the BBC is grasping for stupid stories to grab the public’s attention now that their cash cow, Donald Trump, has left the scene.
