Sheila Jackson Lee’s Gun Control Mega Bill Would Require MENTAL HEALTH Checks To Buy A Gun

We reported on Friday that Houston, Texas Representative Sheila Jackson Lee has filed a gun grabbers dream bill. H.R. 127 includes nearly every bad idea the anti-gun left has wanted for decades — and the last few months might have made them arrogant enough to try to ram it through.

From the creation of a national firearms license, the requirement of civil liability insurance for all gun owners, to the establishment of a national ammunition registry and more, this bill is a nightmare!

One aspect of the bill that’s getting lots of attention — as it should — is the requirement that gun owners must have a mental health check before they can purchase a gun.

It’s just as outrageous as it sounds!

The Facts The wording of the bill includes this requirement:

“(2) PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION.—A psychological evaluation is conducted in accordance with this paragraph if—

“(A) the evaluation is conducted in compliance with such standards as shall be established by the Attorney General;

“(B) the evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist approved by the Attorney General;

“(C) as deemed necessary by the licensed psychologist involved, the evaluation included a psychological evaluation of other members of the household in which the individual resides; and

“(D) as part of the psychological evaluation, the licensed psychologist interviewed any spouse of the individual, any former spouse of the individual, and at least 2 other persons who are a member of the family of, or an associate of, the individual to further determine the state of the mental, emotional, and relational stability of the individual in relation to firearms.

The Historical Precedent Isn’t Good This mental health provision isn’t new. It’s been proposed in New York in the past, and is certainly not going away any time soon.

On the face of it, a leftist might think, “Who would object to that? Only crazy people would mind that! If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about!”

Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.

The idea is as old as Communism! Russian leaders Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev imprisoned countless people who disagreed with their Communist agenda, labeling them “mentally defective” before sending them to prison, labor farms or worse.

China’s Chairman Mao did this too, denying people who questioned his policies the right to vote, travel, and more — claiming that they were “mentally defective.”

An idea like this would have sounded like far out fear-mongering in 2019 but has a lot more plausibility in 2021.

We’ve seen countless impositions on our right to vote normally, travel freely, do business, and much more in 2020.

Congresswoman Jackson-Lee and the radical leftists in Congress are trying to do the exact same thing: use the results of politically motivated mental health evaluations against gun owners who disagree with their socialist gun-grabbing agenda!

After all, H.R. 127 and those in Congress who support it would essentially weaponize the Department of Justice and mental health staffers against gun owners!

And once a federal employee — aka, not a doctor and not an unbiased person — has deemed you ‘mentally unfit’ for gun ownership, any claims you might make that you ARE mentally sound can be dismissed as the rantings of the crazy person.

“Of course he thinks he’s not crazy! They ALL do!”

Bearing Arms added a good point:

First, let’s look at the attorney general deciding what the evaluation process is. This is an attorney deciding how a psychologist is supposed to do their job. Nevermind that between that and needing approval by the AG, it’s possible to create a system where absolutely no one can get a gun, ever. Hell, just by not approving any psychologists, the AG could bar anyone from buying a gun.

On top of that, no other right protected by the Constitution requires a mental health check. If Congress can do this to the Second, what’s to stop them from requiring a mental health checkup to exercise the First Amendment right of free speech?

Nothing! It’s a dangerous precedent — and entirely unconstitutional.

And gun owners know that the Big Tech cartel would be happy to go along with silencing those that the government has deemed ‘mentally unfit!’

And just to pile on more reasons this provision of the bill is complete lunacy, it sets one more dangerous precedent. It places our gun rights in the hands of individuals. Fallible, biased, and prejudiced people. It’s no secret that some psychologists already think that anyone who wants a gun is psychologically unsound.

Our rights don’t begin once some psychologist signs off on them.

The anti-gun left is pushing hard for mega bills like this, hoping to get some parts of them to stick. But this bill needs to get shot down RIGHT NOW.

Seems that many citizens of both Parties would view theft of our right of self defense, the Bill of Rights and plain words of the Second Amendment as a serious threat. This is an attempt to nullify our Constitutional Bill of Rights. It is a threat far more ominous to America than taking jobs because of alleged climate change or taking feminist rights or protecting special demographics.

Legislators and judges fretted about potential riots from Antifa and BLM if Trump were reelected. No one knows how people will react but it would be astute if they considered there are potential very serious irreversible harmful repercusions to the country when Constitutional rights are taken.

It becomes Catch-22. “You want to own a firearm? Then you must be mentally unbalanced.”

OK, former spouses will give a glowing mental health assessment, right?

And 2 other associates? Who gets to pick them?

So they are declaring everyone in the US to be mentally insane till proven sane by psychiatrists.

But whom will prove the psychiatrists sane enough to make such judgements?

I’m always reminded of the early 1970s when Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines ordered handgun registration, then confiscated those registered guns, then seized dictatorial power.

The US newspapers loved his registration. They loved his confiscation. Then when he seized power they could not believe it and wondered why they did not see this coming.

Strange. We saw it coming when he registered the guns.

1 1/2 million military on duty now.
700,000 policemen.
vs
15 million semi-auto owners.
300 million privately held guns in the US.

And they are going to disarm the people?

1 1/2 million military on duty now. 700,000 policemen.

vs.5 million semi-auto owners.

300 million privately held guns in the US.

And they are going to disarm the people?

Serious question, how do you see people reacting when the feds, clipboards in hand, armed guards behind them, and a writ of whatever on the clipboards, show up at the door, demanding to "inspect and certify homes"?

Likely they will start with paperwork, credit card and online records, bank accounts seized and frozen, the like.

I've seen similar actions a few times in my life, probably most of us have, a couple right in my backyard.

One was two or three decades ago, involving an old-time-turd disturber on the edge of town who put up U.S. OUT of THE U.N. billboards around the city and at his trailer house out on the prairie.

At first he sparred with them over the amount, but eventually he paid what he owed, only now with the words Paid Under Protest in the memo line.

It played out over a year or more, but his property was seized, his "modular" home ended up in the great big hole the bulldozer dug and filled over...the county sheriff, a decent man, played negotiator, kept anyone from opening fire, and saved the landowner from being shot down.

But it was, as they say, a learning experience.

When they start randomly searching homes and arresting people without due process, that’s when CW2 starts

"What's to stop an anti-gun nut of a doctor from prescribing something like Zoloft to his patients, even if they didn't ask for it."

Easy, tell him you don't want it, don't need it, and ask for a second opinion. Have him/her make that notation in the medical record as you watch, and if legal take a phone shot of the entry. Then tear up the script in front of him and keep the pieces so you can prove you never submitted to a pharmacy. It would be best to have a witness during all that.

I'm not sure who is eligible, but I do believe a spouse or close family member would be allowed into such a consultation. Then file a complaint with the Board of Examiners about his incorrect prescribing a controlled substance that you don't need, with statements by yourself and a witness.

Unless the patient is truly batshit crazy and needing involuntary psyche ward admittance, his malfeasance will be obvious. Yes, we're heading into communist dark days, but this won't happen anytime soon.

"I have a liberal friend that has suggested this for years. He’s convinced that this is the only way to stop “gun violence”.............."

I'm sure he doesn't get or know that most of the gun violence in urban cities is caused by the black market of guns. (Oh noes, I'm a racist by saying black). We read about it every day. These thugs/gangsters aren't going to the local FFL approved dealers and buying there. Of course some FFL gun shops could be selling out the back door.

But no mental health check to run for Congress, where you have far more power, and a higher ability of destroying far more lives than a single firearm could?

That bar will get so low that it’ll be an easy pass for me.

Due process?

I don't have to tell you what our present VP considers to be our due.

A year or so I read about or saw on the tube some commentator, a shrewd fellow, but someone I wasn't entirely familiar with.

His message was essentially that the fate of the nation will depend on where the military and the LEOs cast their lot.
