Illegal. The Constitution says the CJ must preside. Clear case at SCOTUS. They are trying to have it both ways by "impeaching" a private citizen. The maximum 'sentence' for a guilty verdict in an impeachment trial is removal from office (Article I, Section III of the Constitution) How do you remove a private citizen from office?
The constitution also states that when the President of the United States is tried, the chief justice of the Supreme Court shall preside as you pointed out.
They will try to say that since Trump is not currently the POTUS, that there is no need to have the chief justice of SCOTUS presiding.
This is political theater at its worst, but the media will present it as the most important legal proceeding in our nation's history.
They are absolutely agitating for a hot civil war so they can move forward with usurping the 2A.

Article 1, Section 3 paragraph 6 says:
The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.
If they are trying a non-sitting president, the CJ does not have to preside.

I think they know that any cj worth more than a nickel of salt is gonna dismiss the case in the first 2 minutes because there’s no such thing as removal of an Ex-president.
