I was reading about the wood of the USS Constitution and it was a mixture of the very hard white oak that gave the ship it's ability to bounce cannon balls off its hull -- and live oak (from Georgia) were used in its vertical beams to give it strength.

From a 1914 report on the ship: "The huge internal braces of the ship were cut in solid pieces from individual trees, as opposed to being compositely joined on site. The result was a hard body that appeared to deflect cannon balls like iron."

Great Britain and France had great fleets and experience. America countered with its superior shipbuilding technology and ingenuity.
