I told my neighbor to get a baofeng and I’d program it for him. Most cop freqs are out of baofeng’s range, but fire is still accessible.
Also, you can monitor all FRS and GMRS walkie frequencies, so if people are coordinating near you, you can hear them coming.
Finally, you can talk all you want on them as long as you’re moving. FCC can’t triangulate a moving source.
Know anything about Retevis radios? I’ve been looking at them. Cheaper than Baofeng and some look identical. China doesn’t do patents I guess.
Retevis seems to get as good of reviews as baofeng.
Been looking at models that will do frs/gmrs, 2m and 70cm. Plan on getting a tech license in the not too distant future. Found I have a Ham repeater 5 miles from me even though I’m in the boonies.
Wrong! 42 years ago I had a "dop scan" device for transmitter hunting. Good enough to pin down which antenna was in use on your car. You don't think the FCC has gear at least as good as that now?
You anywhere near Albuquerque? I just sat for and passed the Technician exam this weekend. Picked up Baofeng UV-82HP. So far, I've managed to reprogram one channel and change the display color. The manual is... lacking. Gonna have to find a teenager.
