McConnell circulates procedures for second senate impeachment trial of Trump

Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday circulated to colleagues a memo outlining the procedure for holding another trial for President Trump if the House impeaches him for a second time in just over a year.

The document, which was first reported by The Washington Post, lays out how the Senate would proceed if the House approves articles of impeachment and transmits them to the upper chamber before or by Jan. 19, when senators are scheduled to resume regular business after the January recess.

Schumer can proceed with the trial after he becomes Majority leader. Remember there are two penalties proscribed by the constitution. One is removal from office, which would be moot at that time, but the Senate can assign the penalty barring Trump from future office. Impeachment trial isn’t derailed by Jan 20, just delayed for the disqualification penalty phase.

Any Republican who failed to support President Trump needs to face a ferocious and well financed primary challenge.

In most cases that would be adequate to convince the older ones to retire.

But—in the case of the U.S. Senate it would take six years for that strategy to play out...

and many here are very concerned what the country will look like in six years....

It was my fault for not labeling it as sarcasm. Sorry about that.

I had heard that too. But how is it possible? And for what?

Alcee Hastings was impeached and removed as a federal judge, but then was elected to the House.

Nevertheless, if they succeed in banning POTUS, it will create a backlash they can’t even dream about. The MAGA movement won’t go away, and DJT could become leader of his own party and kingmaker for his successor in 2024.

Her majority will sadly not be razor thin in 2022...

The GOPe committed suicide by allowing the theft of a presidential election and doing nothing about it.

The Uniparty are not going to impeach and convict Trump. They are going to arrest him and charge him with inciting a riot.

Pelosi, Biden, Harris, et al are FAR more guilty of incitement to riot than President Trump could be! Their egging on of Antifa and BLM all last year is more than enough proof of their guilt. They indirectly caused BILLIONS in damages in numerous American cities and did nothing to discourage or stop it. When the truth about the crimes of the Bidens comes out, they should be added to the articles of impeachment against Joe Biden!

The only thing about a document dump or declassification right now is that would anybody follow orders? There’s a procedure for that and I now doubt any person would follow through. They’ll just run out the clock or just quit or get fired intentionally

Our Republic committed suicide by allowing the theft of a presidential election and doing nothing about it.

By definition. McConnell is basically saying - Schumer can do what he wants once he gets the majority, but this is not happening under my Senate majority. As to the trial, Democrats will, again, do what they want. But any Republican who votes to convict is rolling the dice. Trump’s general election endorsement record isn’t great, but his success rate at turfing GOP candidates during primaries is >50%.

Rasmussen’s approval numbers just came in - Trump is at 51%. That means that en masse, Republican voters support him. Any GOP senator who goes after Trump may have committed political suicide. The Senator from Sassy, NE, has slammed Trump at every opportunity. He voted no at the 2020 impeachment trial. Romney voted yes. Romney’s *UT* disapproval number is 84%. That airport incident with UT Trump supporters giving Romney a hard time was no fluke. A roach could walk in and beat Romney in the UT GOP primary.

[[Guess Mitch plans on this being his last term in the senate]]

Democrats have probably assured him many more years in the senate-

Hopefully it is not an issue of “following orders” but rather a few patriots happy to assist the President.

He does not need everybody on board—he just needs a few folks willing to support him.

The GOP will be relegated to at most a regional party in the future. That’s all. Too many will never vote GOP again. I’m one of them. Elections in a totalitarian police state seem rediculus anyway and that is the direction we are moving.

Mitch has gone full GOPe back-stabber.

Does anyone read these articles? This one says:

“The Senate trial would therefore begin after President Trump’s term has expired – either one hour after its expiration on Jan. 20, or twenty-five hours after its expiration on Jan. 21,”

It looks like McConnell has just rendered an impeachment trial moot if Pelosi's House impeaches again.

We may be looking at a true one party government for a while. That’s gonna get ugly. So much for “it can’t happen here”.

They don’t have enough votes to convict. The GOP would be committing political suicide to convict Trump.
