Schumer can proceed with the trial after he becomes Majority leader. Remember there are two penalties proscribed by the constitution. One is removal from office, which would be moot at that time, but the Senate can assign the penalty barring Trump from future office. Impeachment trial isn’t derailed by Jan 20, just delayed for the disqualification penalty phase.

By definition. McConnell is basically saying - Schumer can do what he wants once he gets the majority, but this is not happening under my Senate majority. As to the trial, Democrats will, again, do what they want. But any Republican who votes to convict is rolling the dice. Trump’s general election endorsement record isn’t great, but his success rate at turfing GOP candidates during primaries is >50%.

Rasmussen’s approval numbers just came in - Trump is at 51%. That means that en masse, Republican voters support him. Any GOP senator who goes after Trump may have committed political suicide. The Senator from Sassy, NE, has slammed Trump at every opportunity. He voted no at the 2020 impeachment trial. Romney voted yes. Romney’s *UT* disapproval number is 84%. That airport incident with UT Trump supporters giving Romney a hard time was no fluke. A roach could walk in and beat Romney in the UT GOP primary.

They don’t have enough votes to convict. The GOP would be committing political suicide to convict Trump.
