For instance, in Japanese yen, oil prices are up 5.5x since 1970. In dollar terms, they are up 16.5x ($3 per barrel in 1970). CD’s alone won’t preserve the value of someone’s savings. For someone whose savings aren’t invested in a small business or real estate, it is advisable to put it in stock or precious metals index funds. I buy individual stocks, but not everyone has the time or attention span for that.
