A suburban Chicago man chased down his stolen car with 2 teens inside, then shot them both, one fatally, after a struggle
Sgt. Chris Covelli said detectives Sunday were still trying to find out how the 35-year-old Round Lake Beach man — who had reported his 2012 Chevrolet sedan stolen from his Fairfield Road home Dec. 30 — spotted the car in Volo in the middle of the night. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he located it by coincidence, if he had a tracking system onboard or if he’d left some type of electronics in the car he could trace.
The 35-year-old, who is not being named because he has not been charged with a crime, called 911 when he and the two 17-year-old boys got into a confrontation and physical fight, Covelli said. When it was over, both teenagers were suffering from gunshot wounds.
“The caller was the 35-year-old, dispatchers could hear the physical altercation in the background,” Covelli wrote in an email.
One of the three was armed with a handgun, although detectives were not yet sure to whom the gun belonged, where he’d been carrying it or when or why he drew it. Covelli said it was too soon to say whether the gun owner had a firearm owner’s identification card or a concealed carry license.
“Sheriff’s detectives are working to determine this as well ...,” he said. “One would need a FOID card and possibly a CCL to legally possess the firearm. I can’t say at this time whether or not anyone involved possessed those.”
It wasn’t clear how the confrontation escalated.

I feel safer knowing the “teens” committing crimes have a firearm owner’s identification card.
The shootees relatives will be in a bad way if the shooter doesn’t have any large assets.
Usually we have to see a picture before we declare that. :)
In this circumstance, the significance is that in IL lacking an FOID, the owner of the handgun is guilty of a felony. Gangbangers or felons in possession beat that charge easily. Citizens, not so much.
I know! I used to live in Lake County and worked in Waukegan. I’ve been in DuPage for the last 26 years.
Vigilante justice isn’t perfect, but its better than no justice at all. In fact, the threat of catching a bullet from a victim is a much higher deterrent to criminals than fear of police.
I would argue that I didn’t need a concealed carry permit in this case.
CC laws are intended to prevent citizens from using firearms in confrontations when they present themsdelves. This need had already presented itself. The car owner was searching for the thieves of his car, and to retrieve his car from them. He had a right to do that. A confrontation was likely with car thieves who had a heightened likelyhood of being armed.

Retrieving the car, I don't know, I suppose it means what chased means. I hate to speculate, but I suspect from the LEOs perspective the issues will be the propriety of his locating/chasing down the car. Which was his and imo is proper though risky. But which I'm sure, if charged, the prosecutor will use to attempt to strip him of his self defense right. And the nature of the confrontation itself, whether it was self defense or not. In the absence of video or witness' that's a tough one to prove either way.
Absolutely correct. The settling of the American west is rich with stories about how vigilante justice finally brought law and order when the law wasn't much interested (or capable) of protecting the citizens.
Some of the vigilantes were quite fair in their administration of justice. Others not so much.

I have pretty good concealed carry insurance, but I am certain that it would not apply if I tracked someone down and killed them.
As for no charges, even if this was a righteous shoot, he’d be charged in Chicago.

I wouldn't be surprised if the victim was off-duty law enforcement.
In general, insurance can't pay out for the commission of a crime. Check your policy, I have USCCA and from memory they pay unless/until you're convicted, it stops then and don't require return of funds paid to you or your attorney prior to that. But don't take my word for it if you're concerned, check.
