A suburban Chicago man chased down his stolen car with 2 teens inside, then shot them both, one fatally, after a struggle
Sgt. Chris Covelli said detectives Sunday were still trying to find out how the 35-year-old Round Lake Beach man — who had reported his 2012 Chevrolet sedan stolen from his Fairfield Road home Dec. 30 — spotted the car in Volo in the middle of the night. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he located it by coincidence, if he had a tracking system onboard or if he’d left some type of electronics in the car he could trace.
The 35-year-old, who is not being named because he has not been charged with a crime, called 911 when he and the two 17-year-old boys got into a confrontation and physical fight, Covelli said. When it was over, both teenagers were suffering from gunshot wounds.
“The caller was the 35-year-old, dispatchers could hear the physical altercation in the background,” Covelli wrote in an email.
One of the three was armed with a handgun, although detectives were not yet sure to whom the gun belonged, where he’d been carrying it or when or why he drew it. Covelli said it was too soon to say whether the gun owner had a firearm owner’s identification card or a concealed carry license.
“Sheriff’s detectives are working to determine this as well ...,” he said. “One would need a FOID card and possibly a CCL to legally possess the firearm. I can’t say at this time whether or not anyone involved possessed those.”
It wasn’t clear how the confrontation escalated.

People forget one important role the cops play is to protect criminals from the angry mob.
“Either the car owner didn’t give a statement or the police are holding back details.”

They seem to only grill citizens to see whether they have all the documentation and paperwork to have a gun and carry it.

My lawyer, who is also a good friend, went on about a situation like this once long ago and she told me something I haven’t forgotten.
If you are ever involved in a shooting or anything more serious than a simple traffic stop, etc. then do not say a single word but “LAWYER”. Give them your ID only, you have the right to remain silent but the police are trained to get a story, whatever it is, out of someone as fast as possible.
Never, under any circumstances EVER say anything to anyone, just say “I have the right to remain silent and I am, I need to talk to my lawyer” and nothing else. She told me half he clients talk themselves right into a major ordeal because they are either intimidated by the police, intoxicated, or fall for the “Hey, I’m on your side, we want to help you, but first you have to help us” line and start talking.
Just STFU, ignore the glares and the intimidating ride down to the station and wait for her to get there. Advise I have taken to heart after she went on describing the messes good people put themselves in by playing into the game for their first time against the professionals.
If charged, arrange for 10 of the jurors to have been victims of car theft. In Chicago that’s no problem.
At least it wasn’t you. Personally days after the crime if I knew the location of my car, I’d call 911 and let the sheriff recover it. I suspect this will cause the owner more aggravation and likely expense than the car is worth before it’s over, even if he’s not charged.
