Hopefully the teens were the thiefs and didn’t buy it from skinny on the corner...but best of luck to the vehicle owner....

Good work. You’ve got the right to protect what’s yours. I agree, presuming by "what's yours" you mean your life not your car.

"Agree. And if you asked, I bet she'd tell you not to recover the stolen property yourself."She's a good enough friend she would rip me a new one right there in the station if I did that too.

“firearm owner’s identification card”
I feel safer knowing the “teens” committing crimes have a firearm owner’s identification card.

The shootees relatives will be in a bad way if the shooter doesn’t have any large assets.

In this circumstance, the significance is that in IL lacking an FOID, the owner of the handgun is guilty of a felony. Gangbangers or felons in possession beat that charge easily. Citizens, not so much.

I know! I used to live in Lake County and worked in Waukegan. I’ve been in DuPage for the last 26 years.

Leave other people's stuff alone. The life you save may be your own. Vigilante justice isn’t perfect, but its better than no justice at all. In fact, the threat of catching a bullet from a victim is a much higher deterrent to criminals than fear of police.

I would argue that I didn’t need a concealed carry permit in this case.
CC laws are intended to prevent citizens from using firearms in confrontations when they present themsdelves. This need had already presented itself. The car owner was searching for the thieves of his car, and to retrieve his car from them. He had a right to do that. A confrontation was likely with car thieves who had a heightened likelyhood of being armed.

Concealment is probably not the issue. As to the CCL, better to argue it was cased, unloaded in your car prior to the incident. In general that's legal without a CCL. In Lake County. If you didn't have an FOID, owners identification, being in possession of a handgun is a felony for which there's not much defense.
Retrieving the car, I don't know, I suppose it means what chased means. I hate to speculate, but I suspect from the LEOs perspective the issues will be the propriety of his locating/chasing down the car. Which was his and imo is proper though risky. But which I'm sure, if charged, the prosecutor will use to attempt to strip him of his self defense right. And the nature of the confrontation itself, whether it was self defense or not. In the absence of video or witness' that's a tough one to prove either way.

People forget one important role the cops play is to protect criminals from the angry mob.Absolutely correct. The settling of the American west is rich with stories about how vigilante justice finally brought law and order when the law wasn't much interested (or capable) of protecting the citizens.
Some of the vigilantes were quite fair in their administration of justice. Others not so much.

“...legal insurance because this will be expensive even if there are no charges.”
I have pretty good concealed carry insurance, but I am certain that it would not apply if I tracked someone down and killed them.
As for no charges, even if this was a righteous shoot, he’d be charged in Chicago.

BTW, in IL transporting cased, unloaded in your car is technically OK on your person in most circumstances too.

From the article: It wasn’t immediately clear whether he located it by coincidence, if he had a tracking system onboard or if he’d left some type of electronics in the car he could trace. Tracker or bait?
I wouldn't be surprised if the victim was off-duty law enforcement.

I have pretty good concealed carry insurance, but I am certain that it would not apply if I tracked someone down and killed them. In general, insurance can't pay out for the commission of a crime. Check your policy, I have USCCA and from memory they pay unless/until you're convicted, it stops then and don't require return of funds paid to you or your attorney prior to that. But don't take my word for it if you're concerned, check.
