The American population is a unique mosaic of cultures—and almost 40% of people identify as racial or ethnic minorities today.
In this treemap, we use data for 2019 from the Kaiser Family Foundation, which bases its analysis on the latest American Community Survey (ACS) data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Then we break down the same data on a state-by-state basis.
Growing Diversity in America
As of 2019, here is the current distribution of the U.S. population by race and ethnicity:
•White: 60.1% (Non-Hispanic)
•Hispanic: 18.5%
•Black: 12.2%
•Asian: 5.6%
•Multiple Races: 2.8%
•American Indian/Alaska Native: 0.7%
•Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander: 0.2%
Note that the U.S. totals do not include Puerto Rico.
However, these race and ethnicity projections are expected to change over the coming years. By the year 2060, it’s expected that the distribution of Non-Hispanic Whites as a percentage of total population will fall from 60.1% to 44.3% of Americans.

Source: U.S. Census Bureau. *Excludes Hispanics **Other includes American Indian/Alaska Native (0.7%) and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (0.2%). Both proportions remain unchanged in these projections.
Interestingly, the proportion of those from multiple racial and ethnic backgrounds will more than double, from 2.3% to 4.9% alongside rising patterns of interracial marriage.
Over time, the U.S. Census has been vastly expanded to reflect the true diversity that the country holds. In fact, it was only from 1960 onwards that people could select their own race—and only from 2020 can those who chose White or Black provide further information on their roots.
A State-by-State Breakdown
Of course, racial diversity in the United States differs widely from region to region.
In the Northeast—particularly the states Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire—the Non-Hispanic White population accounts for 90% or more of the total. In contrast, Black populations are highest in the District of Columbia (45%) and several Southern states.

Of all the 50 states, Hawaii is home to the largest share of Asian populations at 39%. It also has one of the most diverse racial breakdowns in the nation overall, including the highest proportion of mixed race individuals.
Looking to another island, an overwhelming majority (98%) of Puerto Ricans are of Hispanic origins. While it’s not a state, its inhabitants are all considered U.S. citizens.
Charting the U.S. population by race is crucial for a number of reasons. This information can be used to better understand existing income and wealth gaps, track public health outcomes, and to aid in policy decision-making at higher levels.
We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.
—Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the U.S.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated to better reflect U.S. Census Bureau categories.
What really matters is race according to age group.
Crazy that 3 states with plus 90 percent white are big time democrat states.
So my take on this is we are a majority white nation who is being dictated to by the minority. Who is crazy here?
That is why the gender war is stoked by the elites: to stop white women from voting the same as white men. Short-term gains for sure, but in the end more and more are dying childless while they’ve spent decades working to pay taxes to subsidize non-white children.
The term Black is a political construct the purpose of which is to create the concept of unity, of a monolithicity that does not exist.***
In the current election it became unavoidably apparent that there is a minority of the negro minority. That minority minority is composed of Americans. The minority majority are Africans that have returned to the tribal state from whence their ancestors hailed.
The minority majority are in fact a population that has been weaponized and given control of our major cities.
The minority majority are actually domestic enemies of America acting as a political weapon
*** There is no “black homogeneity”. The term refers to a black culture that is in reality a host of subcultures most of which are at root Anti American. Notable are negro professional athletes and various minority groups hiding as churches. There are many others including those composing the minority minority which are citizens assimilated as Americans.
When Whiteys are less than 50%, will Whiteys get affirmative action, preference in college admissions and jobs and be able to write books on “black privilege”?
Republicans should have been going all out to make gains with Latino voters. Trump certainly did better but republicans should do all they can to gain their votes. And I believe there are ways to do it without allowing illegal immigration.
That is the issue facing Dems, and why 2016 made it clear they had to assume full control of the media for the 2020 race and beyond: Not only were Hispanics open to the message of keeping more of their earnings with lower taxes, but blacks were as well. Blacks in a few key states could have put Hillary in office, and they didn’t. The 2020 election theft was due to the fact that Dems realized the Trump message didn’t just resonate with whites, but with many new immigrants who left socialist dumps and didn’t want to vote themselves another one.
Race doesn’t matter. Patriotism matters. A very large portion of whites are stoopid commies. Most of Antifa and a lot of the people in Leftist demonstrations are white. Most of the young leftists are the product of old commies. Teach your kids and grandkids well.
Majority white does not mean politically homogeneous. White elites and women are some of the most left leaning politically no matter what state you look at. Hispanics in my view are by culture more conservative. I believe blacks are too, that is the working class whole family blacks. Both groups are the ones who suffer from gang violence and urban problems in general.. As the last election shows they are ripe for conversion as their leaders have sold them out to the left politically and given them nothing but handouts in return.
They are our allies in any conservative movement if given the right leadership.
They live in a bubble and don’t know reality.
now here’s an idea...visualize us ALL as Americans!!
America’s strength come from the fact that it has ALWAYS been a melting pot..to the concern of the rest of the world
No it’s not. They’re free to vote for every dumbass social justice policy, because they’ll never have to live with the consequences of said policy.
almost 40% of people identify as racial or ethnic minorities today.
And why wouldn’t they when there are all sorts of advantages, set asides and special treatment for them? It is legal and encouraged to discriminate on the basis of race among other characteristics. Never mind the degree to which waving the yellow flag of race is useful for that late great American pastime; wallowing in self pity.
Black 12.2%?? Nonsense!
Based on recent TV news and commercials i’ve seen, black females alone must be at least 50% of US population.
There is no pure black in nature. There are no black people.
NH is conflicted. They sent demoncraps to Washington, but have a R governor and flipped the state house and senate to R this election.
Makes you wonder how much fraud took place at the national level.
TX is turning bluer with each passing decade. TX goes blue, akin to CO, NV and NM (and perhaps AZ) and it’s over. There’s a trend here and it’s not our friend. The GOP has to address this now or else the country becomes CA and MA.
