Admissions changes aim to remedy segregation in NYC schools
The Associated Press ^ | December 18, 2020

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials announced a series of admissions changes for hundreds of middle and high schools Friday in one of the most significant steps the nation’s largest school system has taken in years to address racial segregation.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city is suspending merit-based screening systems for its selective middle schools for at least a year. That means that academic records, auditions and other assessments will no longer be used by schools to skim off the top-performing elementary school kids and segregate them from other children.

A lottery would be used when schools have more applicants than available seats.

The change is meant to address a pattern that has led to highly sought-after schools filling up with white, wealthier students.

“It’s time to start using every tool at our disposal to address inequality,” de Blasio said. “The status quo in New York City public schools cannot continue.”

Momentum for such changes has been building in the city for several years, but implementation was hastened by the coronavirus pandemic, which has upended the normal school application process.

The system also will eliminate geographic priorities, including borough residency requirements, for high school admissions next year.

Quickest way to get the best and brightest to move out of NYC. Nothing is more important to home buyers/sellers than the quality of the local school.

Remedy segregation? Don’t have time to read it right now but probably it will foster segregation.

Pure AP propoganda. The sought after schools are filling up with East Asian and Indian students.

Just like with the experience of colleges, admitting students not prepared for rigorous work and long hours of studying will result in them being at the bottom of the class. It almost never fails.

What segregation?

Think about it. The current generation of blacks never really experienced segregation. This generation is all about a black society and keeping whites out of their lives. They tacitly want to be segregated.

I say fine. Give them what they want.

Now...institutionalized segregation? That's a different thing. And it does not exist these day. With "diversity" and "inclusion" being the watch words...there is no way it can exist.

“”to address racial segregation””

“”to skim off the top-performing elementary school kids and segregate them from other children.””

Well, which is it? Segregation based on race OR segregation based on performance? Can’t have it both ways, can they?

I know, I know...top-performing kids HAVE TO BE WHITE! But like Biden said - poor kids are just as smart as white kids or some dumb statement - which is all he’s capable of!

When is this “inequality” ever going to end? It’s really dead and time to bury it...

These schools may not be local. The kids may have to commute to get there. What it will do is ruin those schools that had a good rep. They will have to dumb down the curriculum and the better teachers will leave.

Ultimately, this is a boon to private schools in NYC.

Why do we allow some colleges to allow Blacks to ask for separate events...even classes...they are segregating themselves....

The Asian kids have really made a mess of the lefty “race pecking order”.

That is the dirty little secret of the “race hustle” these days...

I guess they noticed the vast number of top scholars are Asian. Their culture and families demand that they work hard in school. Some cultures demand their kids NOT strive in school, asserting that they are just "Tryin' to be White" (those who do strive often face physical violence for doing so!)

These schools were designed to stop white flight out of the public schools i.e. the city. Notice that this is for one year not permanently. After one year the admissions will revert back to the old policy.

Or better yet NYC will find a new way to cater to these whites and Asians.

The wealthy elites do not want smart middle-class kids getting an education which would allow them to compete with their private-schooled offspring of the wealthy.
