Mike Pence will skip the country as soon as he formally confirms Joe Biden's victory on January 6 with week-long foreign tour to avoid face-to-face confrontation with Donald Trump and angry supporters.
Vice President Mike Pence is expected to leave the country on a week-long world tour, directly after he formally confirms President-elect Joe Biden's victory on the House floor on January 6.
Politico reported Thursday that Pence is eyeing a trip abroad that week that would take him to Bahrain, Israel and Poland, though the trip hasn't been officially confirmed.
'I suspect the timing is anything but coincidental,' a Pence ally told the newsite.
Pence, who as vice president is also president of the Senate, will be put in the awkward position of presiding over a January 6 session of the House of Representatives where the Electoral College vote tallies are confirmed.
Republicans could delay the final sign-off if one member of the House and one member of the Senate challenges any of the state's results.
Then members of the House and Senate will go back to their respective chambers and debate the challenge, but only a majority vote is needed to overrule any objection.
So while GOP lawmakers could delay the inevitable, Pence will eventually have to announce Biden's win.
That could lead President Donald Trump to unleashing on Pence, as he has Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has been a top ally to the president during his nearly four years in office, but congratulated Biden for winning the White House Tuesday on the Senate floor.

If Mike Pence does exactly this, it will be with the blessing of Donald Trump.
What do I mean? Simply this. Donald Trump will have crossed the Rubicon well before January 6. He will have drawn that line in the sand then he will himself cross it. In other words he will declare martial law. If he does not, then he is setting in motion the peaceful transition to the Biden presidency. Which requires Mike Pence to declare Biden has won. Really Mike Pence is not a part of whatever decision Donald Trump may make.

Pence has no choice in the matter. His position in government requires that he swear in Biden.
There was no such requirement for McConnell to pat Biden on the head. He did so by his own free choice and did so in an effort to ingratiate himself into the incoming (he thinks) administration.
