WASHINGTON - In a new show of military might, two American bomber aircraft took off from the United States and flew over a swath of the Middle East on Thursday, sending what U.S. officials said was a direct message of deterrence to Iran.
The flight of the two massive B-52H Stratofortress bombers over the region, the second such mission in less than a month, was designed to underscore America’s continuing commitment to the Middle East even as President Donald Trump’s administration withdraws thousands of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The long-range heavy bombers, which are capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons, are a formidable sight and are flown less frequently in the Middle East than smaller combat aircraft, such as American fighter jets. Adversaries often complain about bomber flights in their region, deeming them a provocative show of force.
“The ability to fly strategic bombers halfway across the world in a non-stop mission and to rapidly integrate them with multiple regional partners demonstrates our close working relationships and our shared commitment to regional security and stability,” Gen. Frank McKenzie, the top U.S. commander for the Middle East, said in a statement.

A better deterrence would be to carpet bomb all of Iran's nuke facilities.
Iran will only understand if we nuke them.
We’ve had nukes since 1945. We haven’t used them since WW2 and nobody believes we ever will. It’s no longer a deterrent to have them. Drop one small nuke on them and the world will realize that we mean business. Also, they’ll only be shocked for a few months and all the condemnation will subside after that, but we will have achieved the intimidation factor needed to bring them in line.
Fortunately, they asked me to go into Nuke Weapons instead.
Because just about the time I'd have finished Tech School, the NVA started knocking the crap out of the B-52s, who were flying a predictable and vulnerable mission profile.

If Biden takes office and resumes helping the Iranians with their nuclear program, Israel may be forced to take out Iran’s nuclear facilities even if the price is high.
And note: Saudi Arabia just gave Israel permission to overly its territory. Thanks President Trump.
I'm not really sure that would do much good because I believe the meaningful facilities are so far underground that surface bombing wouldn't do much good. However, Saudi Arabia just gave Israel permission to overfly its territory, so we'll see.
I wish they would fly over Detroit, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Philthydelphia...... with B61s on the wings.

I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in the early 80’s. I loved watching these behemoths take off and land.

We have the ability to destroy their nuke sites with conventional weapons. I do not know why politicians dither about this. I suspect bribe money.

I was in the USAF from 1970 - 1974. The first time I saw a C-5 rolling down the runway I thought, “Oh, no! That thing will never get off the ground!”.
Unrestricted engines, the most awesome and powerful sound I have ever heard on a large jet...they literally scream.

#7 We have bombs that go into the ground some 200ft and detonate. Dropping one should be all that is needed but more can be dropped until the targets are destroyed.

Well, I’m guessing the effective depth of these mother-of-all-bunker-busters is classified, but there are coal mines that are 7000+ feet below the surface. But, if it’s do-able from the air that would be the way to go.
Permission to fly over Saudi airspace, which was recently granted, would help Israel a lot if bombing would be effective.
