On Wednesday the Department of Defense released the first images of a Covid vaccination record card as well as vaccination kits. “Everyone will be issued a written card that they can put in their wallet that will tell them what they had and when their next dose is due,” says Dr. Kelly Moore, associate director of the Immunization Action Coalition. “Let’s do the simple, easy thing first. Everyone’s going to get that.”

I (or more precisely my parents) had a card pretty much identical to this for my polio vaccination(s) when the vaccines became available.

My son was 2 and I was 24 when we got the oral vaccine and I received no card. I don’t recall any documentation. We lined up at a bus clinic and everyone got their sugar cube and went on their way.

Additionally, my son was dx w/asthma and never received the MMR because at that point it was incubated in eggs. BTW, he has no allergy to eggs. He is now 54 and there were never any repercussions. I am nearly 78.

I avoid doctors and I am educated with physicians in my family and among my acquaintances. The only repercussion was a family practice MD becoming irate when I did go in and he only had a single sheet of records for previous visits. I know others who got treated oddly because they showed no extensive hospital or clinic or MD visit records. Like insurance premiums being raised over and above the usual yearly rise for their age group.

We got cards for polio and small pox. They were in my parents box of kids stuff. We were born from 54-60. I did not get one for polio in the mid 60’s.

I DO remember getting lined up at grammar school to get vaccinated.

No, it is NOT new. I got my polio vaccinations in the mid-1950’s (as did my wife). We BOTH had such cards.

The ID regulations are coming from the airlines/businesses/schools/employers...for now.

When I was a kid, they just checked your smallpox scar.

My son was born in 1965. (errata: I mistyped his age above...he is now 55) We had a vax record early on and eye and dental exams were required periodically through public school. Since then, nada.

I traveled several times to the South Pacific, including New Guinea, in the 70s—2005. I was vax’d one time for yellow fever in 1975. Not one immigration official asked to see anything other than my passport. I was not issued anti-malaria drugs at any point and had to buy them OTC when in OZ.

They did require official documentation that I had a return ticket and sufficient funds to my name, though.

We got the oral in 1967, as I didn’t trust the one in the 50s and they were not required/my parents were also leery (Born in 1943).

One dose, no follow up, no record. I didn’t even have an ID card at that point in time or a DL. Never been hassled for vax records, ever. Oh, and I went to a State University in 1961.

Flew numerous times domestically and overseas. Had a hospital clerical job in 1963/1964. Had a delivery in a hospital in 1965. Received a state massage therapist license every 2 years from 1994-2005. All they wanted was a check.

I sure do remember that. And I certainly don’t want to be forced to show proof of vaccination as a routine. But that’s a separate issue from having vaccination documented for your own records.

And I don’t want to be forced to take a COVID vaccine. I’m in a front-of-the-line group for it, and I haven’t yet been convinced.

I’m old enough that I had all the childhood diseases and therefore acquired natural immunity. I don’t recall any of them being that bad, except for pertussis. I was very young, but it was traumatic.

I had 2 boosters for pertussis when I needed tetanus shots during my life, after the pertussis became part of tetanus. Consequently, I had diphtheria shots, as well. Diphtheria and tetanus were long recognized as extremely dangerous.

This is true for all us elders. We therefore, as a group (there are exceptions) have robust immune systems.

And our *records* were either from parental word-of-mouth of having had the disease or the schoolhouse vaccinations (smallpox). Heck, we had an old country doc who made house calls, back in the day and calling him was a huge decision.

Reading around the net, I pick up that blacks are not happy about being designated in the 1st bucket of vax receivers. Not all health care workers intend to accept the vaccine, either.

I think they intend to not give it to us geezers, with maybe a few exceptions in nursing facilities.
