Trial lawyers fight-—the ones who fight for principle are a great tradition in the US. Politics of this is... America vs. non-American commies. Lots of allies in that fight.

John Adams was a lawyer as well. In fact, he defended the British side for the Boston Massacre. A non-partisan man of the law.
