Retail giant Macy's is under fire after calling the Zeta Phi Beta Centennial Steppers a "diverse dance group" in a Thanksgiving Day tweet.
Zeta Phi Beta, founded at Howard University in 1920, was one of the many performing groups at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year.
"What's that sound, you ask? Why it's the diverse dance group, Zeta Phi Beta Steppers!" Macy's exclaimed in a now-deleted tweet. "Performing a special routine they put together to help us celebrate this unprecedented year."
The tweet prompted a response from MSNBC's "The ReidOut" host Joy Reid who explained that the Centennial Steppers are "not a 'dance group.'"
"Zeta Phi Beta is a Black sorority founded at Howard U in 1920 and part of the Divine Nine," she said. The Divine Nine is a coalition of nine Black sororities and fraternities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
Social media users called Macy's description "reductive" and asserted that Macy's had used the Centennial Steppers.

So they performed a dance routine, but it offends the sensibilities of Joy Reid to call them a dance group.
Ok, got it. So in our ignorance, we can’t call them anything, since to innocently think they are a dance group because they dance will set off a firestorm.
If they don’t back down I will spend some Christmas dollars at Macy’s. If they do I am out.
Joy Reid could find something to bitch about in a phone book listing. Who gives a crap what she thinks. This PC-ness is a monumental waste of time.
Oh no. They must be mentioned. But the manner in which they are addressed must first be approved by the Grand Sultan of the #bm cabal.
Basically, all the black fraternities did choreographed competitons. Everybody got along, it was a fun time.
In this case, it sounds like calling a drum & bugle corps a marching band. Or calling Marines soldiers.
I sincerely thought the issue was going to be calling an all-black group “diverse.”
That is hilarious. Macy’s calls an all black step team “diverse”. I think they meant to say “Hey Macy’s has diversity in this parade! Look at these steppers doing a historically black dance from a historically black college. See this isnt just parade of white girls trying to look and act brown.”
Then they get called out by a diverse tv person who refers to to “Pan-Hellenic”.
What’s diverse about a black sorority? I mean they are all black. Diverse to me means you would see people of all races and ethnicities. All I saw was another pro segregationist group of race baiters.
You can scream racism all day long.
...but when there isn’t any, you just make a fool of yourself and piss everyone off.
So dancing is now off-limits and must be cancelled?
Reid is one of the perpetually offended.
I think the word “dance” triggered Joyless Reid into thinking Macy’s is stereotyping Blacks as dancers. Oh my. The horror of calling the group of sororities performing some dances a dance group! If Macy’s had called them a Black dancing group that would have really triggered the warped lefties!
I once told a friend who was fresh from Marine Recruit Training and standing ramrod straight in his uniform, "At ease, sailor."
The look on his face was priceless.
How can they be a “diverse dance group” if they are a black group?
No Asians?
No Latinas?
No whites?
No mud people?
Wouldn’t an all black sorority be...dare I say it...racist?
Could they have said “a group of twerkers”?
And the look on your face after losing a few teeth was... 8~)
