A shocking study about Ireland’s new abortion law provides gruesome details about how unborn babies are being stabbed in the heart with a poisonous solution so painful that even the American Veterinary Medical Association advises anesthesia for animals being euthanized.
Yet, no such protections exist under Irish law for unborn babies who are capable of feeling pain, pro-life leaders in the country said this week.
Published in the journal BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the study interviewed 10 Irish doctors who do late-term abortions. They admitted to researchers that they “kill” unborn babies in “brutal” procedures that involve stabbing them in their hearts.
“The findings in this study are truly heart-breaking,” Eilís Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign said. “It goes way beyond confirming the worst fears that pro-life campaigners expressed before the 2018 referendum about what would happen in the event of legalized abortion. Doctors in this study are openly talking about the grotesque life-ending procedures they engage in, yet in the same breath they want to see the legal grounds for abortion expanded even more.”
Ireland voted to repeal its Eighth Amendment, which granted unborn babies a right to life, in 2018. By the end of 2019, 6,666 unborn babies had been legally aborted in the country. The law allows abortions for any reason up to 12 weeks and without restriction in cases of fatal fetal anomalies.
Late-term abortions typically are performed by injecting potassium chloride into the unborn baby’s heart to stop it. Then, labor is induced and the mother delivers her unborn baby’s dead body.
Though the Irish doctors tried to justify their life-destroying work, they admitted to researchers that what they do is “brutal,” “awful” and “emotionally difficult.” They described “stabbing the baby in the heart” to kill it, and several even referred to themselves as “doctor death.”
“I caused the death,” one doctor admitted. Another told researchers, “I remember getting sick out in the corridors afterwards because I thought it was such an awful procedure and so dreadful.”
In an article at Gript, David Mullins and Niamh Uí Bhriain of Life Institute explained how inhumane late-term abortions are, writing:
A study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology clarifies that potassium chloride is injected into the baby’s heart to induce a fatal heart attack. As recently noted, the administration of potassium chloride is considered so painful that both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the authorities in charge of USA executions consider it necessary to firstly administer an anaesthetic and/or a paralytic to avoid pain or suffering to the animal or the prisoner being put to death.There appears to be no such obligation to administer similar pain relief to babies being put to death in late-term abortion. In fact, [Irish Minister of Health] Simon Harris refused even this small shred of humanity to permeate his legislation when he rushed it through the Dáil in 2018.
In the study, some of the doctors also expressed concerns about being sued if a baby survive the abortion and live outside the womb longer than they predicted. The law allows late-term abortions if two doctors agree that the unborn baby’s diagnosis is “likely to lead to the death” of the unborn baby either before birth or the first 28 days of his/her life outside the womb. According to Irish health statistics, 100 babies were aborted in 2019 because of a fatal anomaly.
“None of us want to be in a situation where we thought, ah sure deliver and then the baby is alive six weeks later and there’s all the issues that go with that,” one doctor told researchers.
The study also suggests babies are surviving late-term abortions and being abandoned to die.
Reacting to the new study, David Quinn, director of The Iona Institute, wondered if Irish voters understood the horrors of abortion when they voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment in 2018.
“But did the public really know it would be like this? What would they think if the curtain was properly pulled back and they could see the awful reality of our abortion law?” he questioned. “This should shock the conscience of the nation. It shows the brutal and brutalising reality of abortion. The doctors involved cannot hide away from the terrible fact that they kill fellow human beings.”

This barbarism is happening in Ireland. Not very long ago Ireland was a moral bastion of Catholicism. Such nihilistic behavior would have never been tolerated. What happened that within a generation the majority of the population has come to embrace hedonism and decadence? The answer is painful. Drug use, pornography and the the epicureanism of the populsr culture have taken their toll. However the Catholic Church is no longer the steady , moral beacon and bedrock of the Irish people. The people now distrust the Church and its clergy. They have witnessed the horrible control of the Church and its institutions by homosexuals. These homosexuals as recorded in the press have behaved in the abdominable manner that is consistent with their behavior, Child abuse, molestations, crass harassment of seminarians and others has resulted in the Irish people rejecting the Church and being left adrift.
Decadence has its consequences. People as noted around the world, without conscience kill their own. Instead of faith, they embrace nihilism.
