'Free speech' social media platform Parler is a hit among Trump supporters, but experts say it won't last

Parler, a Twitter-style social media platform, has gained popularity mostly among President Donald Trump's supporters and right-wing conservatives after the 2020 presidential election, but experts told ABC News they believe it's unlikely the platform will grow any further.

"They have this echo chamber and they can't trigger anyone or target anyone because everyone believes what you believe," said Fadi Quran, campaign director at Avaaz, a global civic organization that studies misinformation. "It gets boring to be sharing the same type of hate, and so they end up having to come back to the top five social media platforms."

Last week, the app gained over 3.5 million users, according to Jeffrey Wernick, the company's chief operating officer. It is now at the top of Apple's App Store list of free apps.

The app advertises itself as a platform for free speech, where users can post "without fear of being 'deplatformed' for your views."

Benedict Evans, a tech analyst, told ABC News he believes the new platform will not gain enough popularity to compete with Facebook and Twitter.

"Parler is a weak clone of Twitter, but you can go there to talk about one particular issue that's now mostly blocked on Twitter," said tech analyst Benedict Evans, referring to the fact that Twitter has been fact-checking or deleting posts and profiles promoting misinformation about things such as voter fraud in the presidential election.

"But how many people care about that one issue? And do they care enough to spend all their time there, and not on Twitter or Facebook where all the other news and discussions are happening?" Evans said.

The “Experts” said the same thing about the Rush Limbaugh program. Seems that if you have an Ivy League degree you are entitled to the moniker “expert” even though you’re never right about anything.

Really don’t like that not only phone numbers are required, but real ID. That’s something I could never give.

What real ID? I signed up for Parler. A mobile phone is required for sign up as a verification to prevent the signup of spam accounts. You enter you mobile number at signup, a verification. code is sent to the phone, and you type that number back in to complete your account signup. Pretty standard stuff to prevent someone from setting up 1,000’s of spam or bot accounts.

Its not a discussion if you can’t have an opinion. It is just a far left echo chamber.

If liberals think it’s boring to be in an echo chamber, they should be flocking to Parler to fight conservatives. The article doesn’t seem to mention that anyone can join Parler and no one is banned for their views. The best liberal tactic would be to flood Parler with liberal accounts and spam conservatives to death. But according to this article, the conservatives would enjoy it. What a stupid premise.

I tried to join but they require a cell phone number and I am not giving it to them. If they don’t have it I cannot be doxxed when their data breech occurs, and it is I’ll.

Twitter has been violating free speech by "fact-checking or deleting posts and profiles" that only they consider are promoting misinformation about things such as voter fraud in the presidential election.

I joined Parler because I wanted to see and decide for myself whether or not there is misinformation in the content of posts.

In my opinion twitter is unAmerican and not the friend of Americans.

Unlike the analyst most people like to decide for themselves what is true and untrue, not by having leftists (or anyone else for that matter) deciding for them!

“”But how many people care about that one issue? And do they care enough to spend all their time there, and not on Twitter or Facebook where all the other news and discussions are happening?” Evans said.”

If I remember correctly, that number is somewhere in the tens of millions. Unfortunately Parler will fail. It will suffer at the hands of the “fairness doctrine.”

I guess those experts do not look for other Hashtags. I found 15 hashtags for Sailing. Found 20 for my home city.

I am sure the number of subjects will grow.

Well, then they certainly should experts on themselves.

something bothers me...
the word “expert”...

what are the requirements to become an expert in a particular field?
how many years experience does it take?
who names a person an expert?
please someone define the word expert.

I would rather be a journeyman

I’ve started to see some “sponsored” posts and they have a couple of other ideas to monetize. They haven’t been trying to monetize yet because there’s not been enough of an audience. They’re building up their popularity & membership first which is kinda the way it has to be done. I’m sure FR didn’t have an $88.000.00 quarterly goal the first year. Did they ask for money at all right off the bat? I haven’t been around since day one but if I had to guess, I’d bet there was no talk of money for a while.

I haven’t seen any nude pics. Sure you’re not talking about gab.ai?

I’m following all the same people I did on twitter. All conservative people that talk politics.
