I think the same thing happened in 2016: No way Hillary could lose rigged election, but Trump victory overcame the planned fraud. Hillary et al were going to try to work the middle of night magic. She sent Podesta out with a vague comment. Obama made the decision to call Hillary to tell her to concede.
Why? I think Obama was freaked at the prospect of election fraud being exposed and blowing back on his “scandal free” legacy.
In 2020, Dems far better prepared to engineer the fraud, but they got caught flat-footed *again* by Trump landslide and had to stop the count to work the middle of the night magic...now with coordinated press cover.
