Moderna: Covid vaccine shows nearly 95% protection

A new vaccine that protects against Covid-19 is nearly 95% effective, early data from US company Moderna shows.

The results come hot on the heels of similar results from Pfizer, and add to growing confidence that vaccines can help end the pandemic.

Both companies used a highly innovative and experimental approach to designing their vaccines.

Moderna says it is a "great day" and they plan to apply for approval to use the vaccine in the next few weeks.

However, this is still early data and key questions remain unanswered.

Comparing the bomb with a vaccine is Apples and oranges.

The bomb is a very crude device and who cares if the yield is 50% greater than predicted. Just light the thing off and run like hell. The bomb is like hand grenades and horseshoes. You only have to be close.

A vaccine is a different story - a 50% error means that people might become ill or die.

Somehow I bet that if there are problems, the companies will be free of liability.

If the vaccine is guaranteed to work by the companies making it, then all involved will have nothing to worry about.

He had mild symptoms after second shot. Awaiting antibody test info now. They collect it and analyze it internally in effectiveness confirmation and only advise the subjects after all results are published. He had invested in Moderna eight months ago and saw this as putting his bets all in one basket and a way to stay very informed.

There is a really easy way to tell who will get really sick. Old people and people who are diabetic fat immunocompromised and or have COPD. Also you should not tell people you are a doctor when proffering your opinions unless you are going to display your license. Anyone can put MD in their user name. I guess it makes you more authoritative when you spout what you think which is really no better than what anyone else thinks. My mother went around telling people she was a Supreme Court justice but she was just mentally ill.

Question: are the companies making the vaccine immune from lawsuits?

All vaccine makers have been immune from lawsuits since 1988. If that were not true, we would not have any vaccines for anything anymore.

looks like across a large population the survival rate is actually above 99% - that it is less dangerous than seasonal flu

The survival rate from flu is about 99.9%

So they can cut corners with the covid vaccine and there will be no consequences. Got it. Thanks for clarifying.

Good reason to let everyone (the fools?) test it out before I consider it.

LOL. whatever. I treat covid patients day in and day out and not all the really sick ones fall in to neat categories. But I bow to your obviously superior experience. Tell me, how many covid patients have you treated?

So the 5% that would spend a significant time in the hospital will now have a 95% probability of no symptoms and 5% probability of some less serious symptoms. None of the 5% that did experience some symptoms in the Moderna study with the vaccine had any serious symptoms.

Encouraging.

Have talked with my NP and based on what she has read to date, and once it is released for use she will take one more look-see at the vaccine information. Provided there are no show-stoppers for me as a patient, she will recommend. It will be a data informed decision.

I understand people not wanting to get the vaccine. But to those people, it is entirely possible that someone makes a data informed decision to get the vaccine.

And yes, there are risks in almost all things. I suppose I could suffer an vaccine-associated anaphylaxis. Okay - you treat that - right away !

We always have a bottle of epinephrine at hand with a small gauge needle when we do annual vaccinations for sheep / goats. Have never had an animal go down with anaphylaxsis, but have heard from a couple reputable breeders who have.

No. Both are applications of science to solving problems.

You haven’t checked credible sources or understand what the “vaccine” is. When you learn about what a messenger RNA vaccine is and how it works you may learn why it doesn’t use aborted baby cells. You are so ply ignorant.

Probably because it isn’t available to them yet.

It’s been made available to the tens of thousands of volunteer study participants selected by Moderna to participate in the phase 1, phase 2, and phase 3 clinical trials. This is the same way every single drug on the market is tested. There is no general use authorization at this point. These are the results of the studies being done to determine whether the vaccines are safe and effective.

Apparently, they’re safe and effective. Now the regulators at FDA will review the study data and issue authorization for use.

If it killed 5% of the people trying it, then you think they’d give it to 50,000+ volunteers while being closely watched by regulators? And you think 2,500 dying/being crippled by a new drug is something we wouldn’t hear about? 2,500 families and zero people blew the whistle?

Will what “backfire”? And what does that even mean in this context?

If you give a vaccine to someone who is already immune, their immune system rapidly destroys the “invading” vaccine. That’s what happens: basically nothing. It’s a waste of a dose is all.
