The Italian Navy chased off a group of pirates attempting to the attack a tanker this week in international waters off Benin in the Gulf of Guinea.
The incident took place November 7 when pirates in a speed boat chased the tanker Torm Alexandra. A helicopter crew from the nearby Italian Navy frigate Martinengo was launched and upon arriving on scene found a pirate skiff with what looks to be about 5 or 6 armed pirates on board.

They should shoot to kill pirates.
The West has yet to accept these two simple truths:
Chased-off pirates will return.
Sunk pirates wont return.
Don't say it.
I went to the page, but couldn’t find a video ...
Considering the deck of the tanker is so high about the water level, how can the pirates board it?
For f*#ks sake, they should at least have destroyed their speedboat and disarmed them. If you are merciful leave them a small raft. Leaving them armed and with their boat guarantees someone else will be victimized!
Lol
And go ahead and say it. We won’t mind. :)
They were peacefully pirating
South side of Africa’s west coast. Definitely NOT Italian waters.
Good on them for doing what is right.
Affirmative action rope ladders will be dropped to them by liberal officers, to remedy the legacy of past discrimination. :)
Dead pirates will be replaced as will sunken boats.
On the other hand, if we raze the ports that are supporting them, sink every boat in the harbor, and then go looking for the people who provided them the arms and boats, then we send a message about what is going to happen to future pirates and their fences.
We should probably also look at preventing companies from paying ransoms for ships and crews. Dry up the revenue and piracy is no longer a paying proposition. Hard on the companies and crews, though.

Yep. And heres another thing. It would make sense to allow these ships to carry armed guards if they so wish. But Ive read that a port will not allow a merchant ship to enter if it is carrying armed personnel.
I guess such a ship could hide its weapons below. But if theyre caught, the fine would be enormous.
Or they could offload their guards in international waters, then have them bob around in the ocean while the ship is in port.
Neither possible solution is very palatable.
Just kraut, thank you.
There was a corporation that, for a while, would put armed guards on ships outside national waters near a trouble spot, then take them off once they exited trouble area. The weapons were kept outside of national waters to prevent issues with the hoplophobic kleptocrats than run the various nations in that part of the world (well, everywhere, actually...).
They ran into a bit trouble with Eritrea, which is apparently the African equivalent of North Korea, and they may have shut down after that.
Russian commercial shipping handles it a little differently:

A sour kraut!
