Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said Tuesday that his Republican colleagues have privately asked him to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden on his election win because they cant do so publicly as President Trump contests the results.
Coons said on CNNs New Day that its "past time for Republican leaders to stand up and say, 'We should accept the results of this election.
A limited number of Republicans, including Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah) and Susan Collins (Maine), have acknowledged Biden as the winner of the 2020 election.
"They call me to say, you know, 'Congratulations, please convey my well wishes to the President-elect, but I can't say that publicly yet,' " Coons told the network, not naming any specific senators.
"My job here, I think, is to continue to urge them privately to do the right thing, he added. And to help the president accept reality and to help their caucus stand up publicly because frankly the transition is going to be chaotic at best if it doesn't get moving very soon. It should be underway already."
The lack of acknowledgement of Bidens win is far reaching within the Trump administration.
General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Emily Murphy, who was appointed by Trump, is waiting to see that a winner is clear before recognizing Biden as the president-elect, a move that delays the transition of power.
Murphys signature would allow Bidens team to access millions of federal dollars for salaries, consultants and travel, to meet with government officials and to get briefed on intelligence. Bidens team indicated they are considering legal action in a phone call with reporters on Monday to kick-start the transition.
When asked if the Biden transition team should take legal action, the Delaware senator told CNN he cant speak for the team.
"That is obviously the right thing, both for the GSA administrator to do and I think the right next step for the Biden transition team, he said.
"There is a lot of important, difficult and urgent work to be done on the transition," he said. "There is a robust and large transition team busy with policy plans, with interviewing potential nominees or candidates for positions. ... They do need access to the vital federal resources that make it easier for them to do their work."
So far, Romney, Collins and Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) have congratulated Biden on his victory.
But other GOP senators have been hesitant to publicly accept Biden as the winner, as Trump has cast doubt on the election results, claiming without evidence that there has been widespread voter fraud. He has refused to concede.
Trumps campaign has filed several lawsuits in different battleground states challenging the ballot count. Some of those cases have already been tossed by state judges.
4 have congratulated him and they are RINO.
They actually think the crocodile will ignore them.
“Privately”? Another way of saying anonymous sources.
I call BS
I call obviously true. If you don't see that the Republican Party with very few exceptions has been gunning for Trump you don't have eyes.
I absolutely take Coons at his word /s
Why? Why is it so hard to believe that the many spineless republicans would do this?
Most of them just want things back to “normal”.
That means Trump gone.
Doesn’t matter anyway.
Trump isn’t conceding.
Coons is a lying POS. He’s the guy Flake would service. Yeah there may be one or two. These are the little pricks who know the rats stole the election but they are fine with it.
At this point, it’s a bit unclear why PA isn’t finishing the count and announcing Biden as the winner, etc. It seems like a strategic effort to prevent various lawsuits from ripening and running out the clock on potential remedies courts could order.
Really, Chris? After the way you maligned ACB, you want pubbies to acknowledge a lie?
Why should any of us even listen to a syllable coming out of this crooked, perverted, bald headed reprobate's mouth? I can't think of a reason.
They could be saying that. Or Coons could be lying - he is a Dem, after all.
The deadline under PA law for the county boards to file their returns with the SOS is November 23. So they have another couple weeks where they can be non-committal, but by then they have to stand by the “numbers” they’ve found. A cynic might say that all this pressure for Trump to “concede” is to make it so the counties in these states don’t have to actually meaningfully attest to these numbers, i.e., to take away the threat that the numbers could be challenged. There’s no reason whatever for Trump to play along. Make them vouch for the numbers.
Means nothing. They are all Whores and we all know it.
As long as the money stolen from taxpayers and others flows to their friends and family they couldn’t care less about the Republic or about our Freedom.
Folks, this is Chris Coons, one of the more smarmy members of the senate and someone who has zero familiarity with the truth.
Out these Never Trumpers and GOPe. Get their names out in public and Trump should note that win/lose he’ll support primary opponents when each come up for re-election.
It looks like the earliest date for certification by a state SOS of the counts in any of the swing/contested states is Georgia on November 20. So November 20 is the earliest date anyone has to actually commit to any of these counts, rather than just talking about them or putting still incomplete numbers on their website. Until then, all this is just talk and noise. There’s still 10+ days for a SOS to blink.
