California voted to reject Proposition 16, which called to allow affirmative action in public employers and education institutions. Proponents of affirmative action have advocated for the need to expand equal opportunity. Student leaders from the University of California told Business Insider why they were "deeply disappointed" to see the rejection of Proposition 16 in California, a state well-known for its progressive values.

In 2018, the day after the election, I was surprised how many of my votes appeared to have been going my way. Unusual for CA. Generally my votes are always opposite to the final result. In fact I’m suspicious when my vote matches the final outcome in CA and indicates I likely voted incorrectly.
And then, in 2018, a week later they had harvested more votes and things had reversed.
You students are stupid and don’t know how to think. Your opinions are worth nothing, like your college “education.”
I don’t know why we don’t go the whole way and re-establish racial segregation as a progressive idea.

It seems that most ballot initiatives in CA that are awful outright fail. Then they just pass it through with legislation. I’ve become convinced that CA uses ballot initiatives not to pass anything but to gauge how far can they take an agenda without too much pushback.
