Michigan had been reliably blue in choosing a president for nearly 25 years, until 2016, when Donald Trump won the state by the smallest margin in the country 10,704 votes. But Joseph R. Biden Jr. has seen consistent leads in virtually all the polls leading up to Election Day.

It doesn’t matter that Loeffler was behind. She was in an “open race” which included Rep. Doug Collins while the Democrat was largely unopposed on his side. So Loeffler should pick up most of Collins’ vote in the runoff which gives the Republicans close to 50% while the Democrats are under 35%. What might change the equation are a) Collins’ supporters who refuse to vote for Loeffler out of spite and b) Dems throwing mountains of cash behind the Democrat because it will be the only race left for balance of power in the Senate.
Even if the worst happens and Biden wins out, I expect the Senate to put the breaks on a lot of Dem malfeasance. Mitt Romney can be a Republican again.
