My way of looking at the election is this. Start with the 2016 results map.
For Biden to win, he has to hold onto every state Hillary won PLUS add Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Those are simply the three Trump states he has the best chance of getting.
If Trump loses those three, his most likely chance to find a Hillary state to take to allow him to still win the election is Minnesota. Nevada would not provide enough EVs.
If Trump ALSO lost the single Maine EV in that scenario, it would be a 269-269 tie. But that would be a Trump win as he has more state legislatures on his side to back him in the state-by-state tiebreaker vote.
If even one other state falls to Biden besides those three and the Maine EV, then it’s almost certainly an election win for him.
Biden was chosen as the strategic candidate to appeal to those three rust belt states, primarily due to simply being from that area of the country. The Dems always knew they had a single, narrow path to win this election through those states. The media spent a lot of time lying that Biden could win other Trump states. But the party always knew it bet ALL their chips on that one path. Biden has no other way to win.
Ultimately, Pennsylvania is the absolute key state. Trump was handed Michigan and Wisconsin on a platter from Hillary. He doesn’t have that advantage this time. But he fought it ought for PA last time and won. This entire election very likely hinges on whether he can do it again.

Yes.
Except they are not quite irrelevant.
They perform certain functions.
1. They are designed to discourage and suppress Republican voters and voter turn out.
2. They allow the Buden people to raise insane amounts of money. (Biden has raised over $1.6 Billion last time I looked. A stunning figure)
3. They allow the Dems/media to claim Biden has won after Trump wins and use that as a justification to start anarchy, riots and looking.
4. They serve as grounds for Biden never to concede.
