By my calculations: on April 21 of this year there were 26,841 cases and 2,742 deaths, for a death rate among cases of 10.2 percent. Yesterday there were 91,530 cases and 1,047 deaths, for a death rate among cases of 1.1 percent. So the fatality rate has gone down tenfold even as the number of cases has increased more than threefold.
The number of cases, by itself, is meaningless. It's only in the context of the death rate that a clearer picture of what's happening is presented.

They’re downplaying the death rate in order to give the appearance (to the uninformed, which is more than half the population) of a looming crisis.
